Well...I've had gmail for 2.5 years...save almost everything...I have 321 MB used right now....so basically...you'll never have to delete again.

I have all of my email dating back to late 2000. It totals about 2GB and it's stored on my hard drive. With 9GB, I could store probably 15-20 years worth of email and not have to worry about it being lost when my hard drive fails.

If people do their home work they will find Palin will destroy his campaign as the maverick. In less than 5 minutes I googled and found that after 6 years as mayor, taxes increased 38%, she tried to ban books at the public library, she slashed funding for teen mothers. And my favorite is, she could not even run a car wash. If McCain had any good judgment he would dump her faster than his first wife.

2GB? Wow. You must have some larger attachments.
It would be really hard to run gmail up that large as they limit the size of any message to either 10 or 15 MB I believe.

Does G-mail still require Invites? I have almost 100.
I store stuff on G-mail like songs that I tracked down on the internet (Rare B-sides and such)
I also store a lot of my word files and other stuff I need to backup.
Right now G-mail is at 2886 MB

You don't need invites anymore. Try out Google Documents.
Also, there is some kind of app out there where you can turn your google space into an online hard drive. Which would be great for backing up files and such. I've heard google isn't a big proponent of it though and tries to disable it.

GMail Drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tried it awhile ago. it was a bit flaky (maybe that have improved it since). Biggest problem was the 10-15MB size limitation per file.

Microsoft might as well just stop making a home version of Outlook at this point, because with Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft all competing with each other for the webmail service, the only thing Outlook is useful for anymore is internal corporate messaging and scheduling. As webmail increases storage space, more and more people will move towards it, and that will be the end of local mail storage. I see that as a positive change, considering how often people lose their data, and how important many e-mails are. Its actually sort of sad that we've just become accustomed to e-mail not being available after 2-3 years...
Mozilla has basically admitted as much by dropping Thunderbird from its core responsibilities.

Webmail cannot replace Thunderbird or Outlook for me. Webmail doesn't get checked every 5 minutes automatically.
My MSU and Gmail accounts get automatically checked by Thunderbird. I prefer the user interface over any webmail solution.

Why do you need 7 year old emails?
I delete anything I don't need immediately and save anything important as a draft.

Yeah, either GMail Notify or Google Talk will notify you immediately of new mail. No waiting 5 minutes.

When is the storage upgrade occurring?
My account still is showing about 2.8 gig....and that is plenty for me but I have kids in various places and we can use the extra storage for picture sharing, etc.
