Demonoid Done?
After not being able to login since Monday night, I figured something was up.
Damn, first TorrentSpy disallows U.S. IP's from being able to search their site, to this.

Torrent Tracker Demonoid.com Taken Offline
By Scott Gilbertson September 26, 2007 | 8:52:16 AMCategories: P2P
The popular Demonoid.com, a semi-private BitTorrent tracker, has been taken offline. Both the torrent tracker and the site have been unresponsive for over twenty-four hours. Although there has been no official word, or statement from the Demonoid administrators, the Dutch news site nu.nl reports that the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) is responsible for the downtime.
TorrentFreak reports that it contacted some of the Demonoid administrators, but even they are not yet sure what happened to the site.
If it does turn out to be the CRIA, this won’t be the first time Demonoid has suffered major downtime due to pressure from the recording industry. Earlier this year Demonoid moved its servers from The Netherlands to Canada after a Dutch anti-piracy group filed a subpoena demanding the site’s ISP remove Demonoid and cough up the administrator's identities.
It would seem that Canada is not the safe harbor Demonoid was seeking and we suspect that the site will likely move its servers again.
While The Pirate Bay is still the most popular torrent tracker online, Demonoid is a close second. Much of the site’s popularity stems from the fact that membership is limited and strict ratio tracking means Demonoid is faster than most trackers. Demonoid is also remarkably free of the spam and fake torrents released by groups like the recently exposed MediaDefender.
Although the site requires registration for older torrents, Demonoid recently began offering the newer torrents (within the last two weeks) to the general public.
So far there’s no word on when Demonoid may come back online, but as with the resurrected Suprnova.org, it would seem that you just can’t keep a popular torrent site down for long.

Well if you have no other place to go, there is always torrentreactor.net. Always free and without membership. But that comes with its own downsides.

Don't understand the "tracker" thing... Seems like anyone "tracking" torrents would be a bad thing.
I just want a good search engine.

You already have a good search engine, Google.
Now good trackers and few and far between. People need to list torrents on their sites and some sites have more active members and content than others. Demonoid was awesome for the content I was looking for (no not porn).

The best part of the site was the lack of porn. You could find anything you wanted without sifting through piles of garbage.

That does suck. Although I haven't used it in about a week since I've ran out of stuff that I want to download. Is it possible to get tired of free stuff?

What's wrong with getting stuff for free??
It's not like people here are freaking out, or that we download a million things a day.

Why? Because we like to download freeware and indie music that is legally distributed via torrent files? Torrents are a great way to distribute and download files.

Agreed. The majority of stuff I download via torrents has already been broadcast on free TV...classic cartoons, old TV series like SCTV, and Spartan games. No harm in that.

IsoHunt's trackers now blocked to US users
24 September 2007 23:41 by DVDBack23
Due to their ongoing lawsuit from the MPAA, the admins at the popular torrent search engine IsoHunt will be blocking US visitors on their TorrentBox and Podtropolis trackers.
According to an IsoHunt statement,
"As of earlier today, we have disabled access from users in the US to our trackers. This goes for ALL trackers (torrentbox, podtropolis) we run. This is due to the US’s hostility towards P2P technologies, and we feel with our current lawsuit brought by the MPAA, we can no longer ensure your security and privacy in the US. So, if you’re outside the US, you may notice less peers. We encourage you to add other public, unhampered trackers to torrents you post, in addition to Torrentbox and Podtropolis’s trackers."
This is the second time recently that sites have been forced to block access to US users including last month's shut down of TorrentSpy.
The MPAA believes that the only purpose of these trackers and engines is to share unauthorized copyrighted content, but the owner of IsoHunt does not agree. “We process copyright takedown requests daily, and have done so for hundreds of requests in the past, if not thousands. We work with all copyright owners, and even the RIAA email us routinely. The MPAA is the only organization unwilling to cooperate with us.”

Demonoid Returns: Canadian Users Banned
By Scott Gilbertson October 01, 2007 | 11:34:57 AMCategories: P2P
After a five day outage that started last week, the popular torrent site/tracker Demonoid.com appears to back online — sort of. Early reports say that the site relaunched with the following message on the front page: We received a letter from a lawyer representing the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.
At the moment, Demonoid trackers appear to be working, but the site is currently down. However, it would seem that the site outage is most likely a technical problem. The front door says “the latest changes to the site are giving us some problems - We’ll be back soon.”
TorrentFreak was the first site to note that Demonoid was back online and the rumored ban of Canadian users comes from the TorrentFreak post, with a number of others reporting seeing the same on Digg. The Circuit Box, which has also been following the outage, disputes TorrentFreak's claims, though it doesn't give any reasons for doubting it, nor does it offer a different explanation.
If in fact Canadian users are being banned from Demonoid and you happen to be living in Canada, it’s time to learn about proxies.

Well, here we go again:
Quote:
Demonoid Shuts Down Again
Written by Ernesto on November 09, 2007
Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, was forced to go offline again because the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) threatened their ISP.

It’s been just over 6 weeks since the CRIA allegedly shut down the Demonoid BitTorrent tracker. Details were scarce at the time, with lots of people simply claiming the site had some technical or server issues. Indeed, TorrentFreak came in for quite some criticism when we claimed the CRIA was involved, but when the site returned there were some ominous signs which seemed to support our claims.
Eventually, the Demonoid trackers reappeared, followed by the site itself but was forced to block Canadian visitors by the CRIA. However, despite blocking Canadians, it seems the CRIA hasn’t yet had enough of harassing Demonoid and its host.
On Demonoid.com we now read:
“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”
Indeed, Demonoid’s host had previously said that if it had any major hassle, it was likely it could pull the plug on the site.
A message on the Demonoid IRC channel says: “Site is down, tracker is up. Expect the site to return, unless we hear otherwise from Deimos.”
Canada seems to becoming more unfriendly for BitTorrent sites - Demonoid aren’t the only ones being threatened by the recording labels there.

Big deal. One goes down, two more pop up. Record and movie industry associations are inept, and actually doing more damage to the companies they claim to support, than would be done if they were just on their own.
Clock is ticking. Innovate, or die.

I wouldn't even know what a torrent was if not for the amount of old sporting event broadcasts floating around.
