Another Great Forde Hit at Jabba RE: Ty

Meanwhile, at another prominent religious school, the football team has slid to 1-7 and Charlie Weis (37) is now 20-13 at Notre Dame. That's just a smidge better than the 21-15 record that got the scourge of humanity, Ty Willingham (38), fired in 2004. Willingham is suspected of causing Marie Osmond to faint onstage during ABC's live broadcast Monday of "Dancing with the Stars."

Heh. Four more games. Giving Weis the benefit of the doubt and saying he picks up one more win this season to go 2-10, That'll be a 21-16 record over three years. A $20 million+ contract, for a net gain of one loss over three years. I believe that's what is called an underperforming investment.

...but, but, but Ty's recruiting classes were horrible and Charlie only really has one class of his own.

Sincerely,

Charlie's excuse makers.

Weis vs. Willingham: The numbers might surprise you - College Hotline - San Jose Mercury News sports blog

Weis vs. Willingham: The numbers might surprise you

By Jon Wilner
Monday, October 22nd, 2007 at 10:40 pm in Notre Dame.
When I saw the final score of the Notre Dame-USC game, something about it caught my eye. It wasn’t that USC demolished the Irish. The score itself — 38-0 — looked familiar.

So I did some checking and found that not only did Notre Dame lose to Michigan by that same 38-0 score last month, it also lost to Michigan 38-0 under Tyrone Willingham.

That got me thinking: How does Charlie Weis’ performance compare to Willingham’s?

I looked at their records in South Bend through 33 games, how each fared against Notre Dame’s biggest rivals (Michigan and USC) and against ranked opponents, and how many blowout losses they each suffered.

In my estimation, Weis’ numbers are no better than Willingham’s and quite possibly worse.

He has that 34-31 loss to USC on his resume. (Has any coach ever gotten more mileage out of a loss?) But Willingham did better against Michigan and significantly better against ranked opponents.

***Record through 33 games

Willingham: 20-13
Weis: 20-13

***Record vs USC

Willingham: 0-3
Weis: 0-3

***Point differential vs USC

Willingham: -93
Weis: -61

***Record vs. Michigan

Willingham: 2-1
Weis: 1-2

***Point differential vs. Michigan

Willingham: -28
Weis: -57

***Record vs. ranked opponents

Willingham: 7-8
Weis: 4-8 with no ranked opponents left
(Numbers based on rankings listed in the UND media guide for 2002-2006)

***Losses by 20 points or more

Willingham: 8 in 36 games
Weis: 7 in 33 games

***Losses by 30 points or more

Willingham: 5 in 36 games
Weis: 3 in 33 games

In addition, this year Weis has overseen Notre Dame’s:

* Worst opening-day loss ever (33-3 to Georgia Tech)

* Worst start ever (0-5)

* Worst loss to USC (38-0)

* Worst home loss in 51 year (38-0 to USC)

Oh, and don’t forget the seven-game losing streak and those five consecutive 20-point losses, both of which date to last season.

Willingham was fired for poor performance and because, in the larger sense, his third-year mark of 6-5 didn’t represent enough progress.

Let’s say Notre Dame goes 2-2 down the stretch — not at all unrealistic. In that case, Weis would have the same number of losses as Willingham, and one more win.

And the best Weis can do in this, his third year, is 5-7.

Any chance he’ll get fired?

We all know the answer to that.
