The Tigers gave up better prospects for Braves shortstop Edgar Renteria than they did last winter for Yankees designated hitter Gary Sheffield. The Braves believe that that right-hander Jair Jurrjens, 21, can turn into their Yovani Gallardo and that Class A outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, 20, could be a star. The move also clears money for the Braves to re-sign left-hander Tom Glavine as a free agent. A rotation of Glavine, John Smoltz, Tim Hudson, Chuck James and Jurrjens or Jo-Jo Reyes would be a significant improvement.

Dombrowski was on with Stoney and Wojo yesterday and said that they will not be going after ARod. He said that no team has ever won a WS with more than 17% of their payroll going to one player.
He also that if Roger's wants to continue pitching, it will be with the Tiger's. He thinks he'll be back. Also that Jones will look into signing with Atlanta and if they don't have any interest in him, he'll probably be back. Didn't seem too concerned about Jones one way or the other.

The Rockies almost blew that stat away.

How many teams have more than 17% of their payroll going to one player?

No team that has ever won a WS. If DD is giving that stat out, I'm guessing he did his homework about ARod and has decided they aren't going to be interested.

I understand what you are saying. My question though - how many teams have had more than 17% of their payroll going to one player? Are we talking 0 for 1 here? or 0 for 300?
My guess is - not very many.

Bored ... so there are 7 teams (8 players) that earn at least 17% of their teams payroll. Most are the teams that rank right at the bottom as far as total team payroll:
12. San Francisco (Barry Bonds) = 17.2% (15,533,970 of 90,219,056)
18. Minnesota (Johan Santana) = 18.2% (13,000,000 of 71,439,500)
24. San Diego (Greg Maddux) = 17.2% (10,000,000 of 58,110,567)
25. Colorado (Todd Helton) = 30.5% (16,600,000 of 54,424,000)
26. Arizona (Randy Johnson) = 17.5% (9,100,546 of 52,067,546)
29. Florida (Miguel Cabrera) = 24.3% (7,400,000 of 30,507,000)
29. Florida (Dontrelle Willis) = 21.1% (6,450,000 of 30,507,000)
30. Tampa Bay (Carl Crawford) = 17.1% (4,125,000 of 24,123,500)
More than I thought ... but most of them have a reason - they are cheap.

I'd love to get Schilling for one year, even at $13 million - your thoughts guys?

I'm guessing Jenkins will probably get a deal for 3 years or so and that's just too long with the age of some of the core we already have. It doesn't give us anytime to transition in some youth at the one position we don't have locked in for the next 2 years at least.

Dombrowski was on WBBL (GR sports station) this AM and said that neither A-Rod or Schilling were in the Tigers future due to the money they would be demanding and the Tigers high mid market status compared to both LA teams, both NYC teams and Chicago wouldn't allow that kind of money to be spent on one player.
If they can't land Rogers and/or Jones, look for former Leyland coached veterans to finish out the staff. Leyland signed a 2 year extension and the team is building for those 2 years.

I would agree that this is the direction right now. However, things can change.
Two interesting names came up listening to the radio this morning. Personally, I'm not sure that i would go after either, but - Bedard and Tejada. The O's are seriously looking at blowing up that team (except for Markakis).
Bedard would be a FA after next season, so you would most likely only get one year out of him - and they would require major leaguers in return.
Tejada is probably more interesting. Signed through 2009, but at 13M/year - obviously the O's would have to pickup some of that contract. And because he has slowed down a bit in the field, a move to 3rd is a possibility. Some risk, high upside.
I'd probably pass on both, but I'd listen.

3rd. He has put on a little weight and slowed down a bit. Still can hit, but his power numbers went down after his injury last year.

When does Inge get the hook? He is the last English speaker in the infield.
I remember when Detroit had the fewest Latin Americans in the majors.
Al Avila has been instrumental in helping Dombrowski build the Tigers like he did when both were with the Marlins.

He is going to be HUGE dollars after that. Not gonna happen.

With Renteria in fold, Tigers focus on pitching
Closer news - looks like Zumaya is the man:
Quote:
|
Jones, 39, is considered an important insurance policy for the bullpen as the Tigers prepare to turn Joel Zumaya, 22, into their long-term closer.
|
LF News:
Quote:
|
But with the acquisition of Renteria, whose offense represents an upgrade in Leyland's batting order, the Tigers are more comfortable with the tentative thought of platooning Marcus Thames and Timo Perez in left, with Ryan Raburn perhaps becoming part of the mix.
