I don't have a problem with that stat so long as he is not just heaving up bad shots. I haven't seen too much of that. Allen can be a streaky scorer and I don't think he has been matched up with Neitzel much so he isn't really taking away his shots.

It seems like this Spartan blog is attempting to take over where the Wonk left off. He's not as good (but then again, nobody is), but he's worth reading on a semi-regular basis.

I believe Izzo brought him in as a shooter.
How many times can you remember in games last year where the shot clock almost expired because Neitzle was covered and nobody would take the open shot -- then heave up a desparation low percentage shot as the buzzer sounded.
If it gets to the point where someone is heaving up bad shots, Izzo will let them know.

My first post, hope I didn't mess up. Watching the Oakland game it seemed like the good majority of shots were clean looks. I like his form, fun-da-mental.

I like Chris Allen's game a lot. Both he and Lucas I feel look a little too over-excited on the court at times and that leads to turnovers or quick shots, but nothing out of the ordinary for Freshmen. I can't say I see him taking a lot of real bad forced shots, the way a young Mo Ager used to do. I think Allen's going to be a great one here before he's done.

Big Ten Wonk was the best Big Ten-related college hoops site (and probably my favorite blog ever). I really, really miss reading that. The guy could predict anything and never said stupid crap to get people riled up. After an MSU loss, his blog always had the most rational breakdown of what happened and it always made me feel better. Gasaway was right far more than he was wrong. Cool he's "moved up," but it's just not the same without that site.
Anyway, if Allen gets under control we're in good shape. We need another guy who can drill threes.

I am a big fan of both. I might be wrong, but they seem to be players that will stay 3 maybe 4 years. Both solid, who will improve their draft status by staying in school. That would be ideal.

He takes 16.7% of the TOTAL shots, but he takes 45% of the team shots when he's ON THE COURT.

Those are stats of Allen's shots against the team as a whole...they said 45% of the shots when he's on the floor...

I feel the exact same way about all three of the freshmen (which is impressive for a three man class) but I'm unsure as to which I feel is going to turn out as the greatest college player. They all have a ton of potential.
Lucas: With his speed and handle, if he continues to improve on his decision making and perimeter shot, he could become a force as soon as next season.
Allen: His jumpshot is in a funk right now but it's by far his greatest strength. I've been impressed with his midrange game. I didn't know he had that skill. Once he regains control of his stroke it'll open up his dribble drive game which will take him to the next level.
Summers: Already has the all-around package, it's just rough around the edges. He can sky for rebounds. His perimter jumper is promising. His stroke from the line is pure. Once his handle improves just a touch it'll allow him to take advantage of his abilities to hang around the rim and finish and draw fouls.

I can confirm with absolute certainty that I'm not as good as the Wonk ("I knew the Big Ten Wonk. The Big Ten Wonk was a friend of mine. And you, sir, are no Big Ten Wonk). But I'm going to give it a shot. Now that I see MSU basketball games through the eyes of tempo-free stats, I figured I might as well post them for others to look at after I'm done calculating them (now that the Wonk isn't doing it for us).
Hope a few stat-minded types will check the blog out--and, hopefully, chime in with some insights of their own. Maybe if we all put our heads together, we can collectively replace the Wonk.

Good work and good luck.
It would be cool and useful if you could keep track of the tempo free stats of just the Big Ten teams and post them on occasion like the Wonk used to do. Some of those lists and matrices that John used to post were pretty informative.

That's great. The tempo-free stats are what made Big Ten Wonk such a different read. I'll definitely be keeping up with your site. It looks sharp, too.

That's going to be the tough part. I definitely intend to keep all the MSU tempo-free stats updated. But doing it for the entire Big Ten is just going to be too time-consuming--so the trick will be establishing context for the MSU stats.
I can only promise to be 1/11 of the blogger that the Wonk was!

Is that a tempo-free estimate?
more seriously, about Allen, I concur that we need a 'chucker', but right now I am liking Summers a lot as he seems to 'let the game come to him' and he's working really well a role player. Rebounding + takes open shots + low turnovers: gotta love those garbage guys

I went ahead and ran the rest of the numbers for MSU players on % of shots taken while on the floor. One consideration (that certainly doesn't explain the full 44%) is that Allen may be on the floor more with Walton and the back-up big men.

45%? gee I wonder why?
Typical lineup when he's on the floor:
Walton
Allen
Summers
Naymick
Ibok
Summers must take the other 55% of the shots
