I always wanted to ask one of the packaging majors at MSU wtf all technology-related items had to be placed in IMPOSSIBLE to open, welded together plastic.

Never got around to asking though. Any packaging majors of tRCMB care to enlighten us on why you feel the need to make opening things a miserable experience???

It's primarily due to theft throughout the entire distribution chain. That's why you see a 1"x1" memory card packed in a 6"x8" plastic pack. Easy to open = easy to rip off.

Someone in this thread made a point about it being a theft deterrent.

I also hate the tape on the ends of CD's/DVD's that keep them from opening. Trying to "pull here" never seems to work.

I've been saying this for years- Clamshell packaging effing sucks

It's mostly defended on the grounds that it's a theft deterrent. Well, I'm sorry manufacturers, I'm not trying to steal it and please stop treating me like a criminal. For me, clamshell packaging is a purchasing-deterrent.

One of my friends is a packaging major and he told me that the reason that use the cheap packaging that is a bitch to open is because... it's cheap packaging. It's easy and cheap to make, and a few frustrated customers is worth saving however much they save per product packaged. The cost factor is the biggest reason according to him.

You know, difficulty opening packages is a very minor annoyance. In fact, sometimes wrestling with a package is fun in a sick, weird sort of way. It's a battle between you and the package. Therefore opening it gives you a great sense of relief and accomplishment. You have defeated the package and won your prize.

....I need help.

Is there any potential of a class-action lawsuit for people injured trying to open those damn things

actually, as a typical piece of **** lawyer i was thinking that if the companies using it knew that 14k people/year go to the hospital with injuries from packaging that they are on notice that these injuries are likely and therefore could be liable.

yes, i suck.

as for apple - their products are a piece of ****. search for my thread re: the shuffle.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with Apple.

I've never used a shuffle, but the products I've gotten have exceeded my expectations (starting with the unboxing).

i'm in a bit of a conundrum with the shuffle. i feel fairly certain that the on/off switch is the problem (it very clearly doesn't work) but if i send it in to apple and it happens to work that time i owe them $100 (more than the damned shuffle). so, i just plug it in the night before i want to use it and it is "usually" ok.

That sucks. I'll tell you what though, if you end up sending it in and that happens, I'll give you my old Nano

Ok theft deterrent. I'll buy that. Now packaging majors here's one for you: Invent a theft detering package that is easy for the consumer to open. For example maybe the cashier could remove some part of the packaging with a special tool or something...

BTW...Ipods are tiny and expensive and could be easy to steal. And guess what? No ridiculous plastic packaging!!! I loved it. A nice little box that I just opened and there was my ipod sitting for me, ready to use.

They're not meant to keep you from getting it open, it's meant to prevent thieves from opening them up inside of the store. Or, at least delaying them long enough to where they get paranoid and just leave it.

In big box stores it's very common for thieves to take electronic equipment to the hardware department, open it with boxcutters, leave the packaging and put the product in their pocket. "Department 10" at Meijer is always back in the corners checking for people doing that ****.
