I'm sorry, but I think you'd be surprised. Someone with as little foresight as yourself probably made the same arguments about paying $100 for a VCR in 1978 when they could just go to the theater and watch the movie for $1!

People like you are exactly the reason why technology doesn't progress faster, because you sit there and **** all over it, saying it sucks, and that people won't use it. Then, in ten years, when you're proven absolutely wrong, no one is there to remember to call you out on it.
at you saying I have little foresight when you were the one that bought an HD-DVD player.

And FTR I bought a 56" 1080p HDTV 1.5 years ago and am always buying the new gadgets (Xbox360, PS3, Cingular 8525, high end PC/laptop, MP3 players, etc etc) so please don't talk to me about holding back technology. I'm not ****ing on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray (no idea why you made that comment as I've been a proponent of both...) they are both good formats. I would just like one to win so the market can move on. Personally I would love to d/l movies straight to a set top box on my TV but it's just not going to be in the mainstream anytime soon. Disc format will be around for a while and if you want to watch HD movies at home you might want to invest in a Blu-Ray player. Otherwise quit whining and deal with it. It's obvious you have some weird grudge against anything Sony but seriously calm down.

So after things like installing rootkits on peoples' computers because they wanted to spy on what they were doing, creating tons of proprietary formats to attempt to lock both consumers and the industry into "standards" that they control, and being one of the biggest proponents of DRM to control how people use media, you think that Sony is a good company, and we should look past all of that and be happy that, at least there might be only one HD format now?

Sony is a terrible company. Like most corporations, they would throw their consumers under a bus to make a quick buck, but the problem is, they control a very wide swath of technology, especially as it relates to media. They have vested interests in gaming, music, movies, computers, audio, and video. Because of this, the use one product division to leverage other divisions and try to lock consumers in to using Sony for any one of the categories listed above. And now you're happy to hand them the keys to controlling HD players, HD media, and indirectly giving them more power in the gaming market as well, all in the name of being happy there would be a "standard" (closed, controlled, and cross-controlled by Sony) in the HD player market?

If they (by way of Blu-Ray) do end up winning, I think it is safe to say, we've all lost just a little bit more.

If it gets me every movie I want in HD then yes I am happy...

How is that so hard to understand?

Then you're a shill. I stand behind my comment about you not having any foresight, because if you did, you'd see what a bad idea giving a corporation like Sony ultimate control, top to bottom, of any technology, actually is. Hopefully they don't decide to turn on an extra hidden bit a year out that makes you pay a "re-license" fee on your movies.

It certainly wouldn't be the shadiest thing they've ever done.

Yeah, but I might be a little concerned since he hasn't sold anything on that e-bay account in almost 3 years.

Not saying it's a brand I would trust or buy, but it's an indication of prices heading in the right direction.

Keep pushing for those techs/formats that will never come to fruition (using your great foresight i.e. buying an HD-DVD player 2 weeks ago) and I'll keep laughing at the fact that you say I have no foresight when I'm enjoying new releases in HD

And up until last week, it could have gone either way. As I posted before, Warner was 99% ready to go HD-DVD exclusive, when they suddenly changed their mind for some reason ($$$$$). Despite that fact, I decided a long time ago I would never buy a Blu-Ray player, due to the reasons I outlined above, so buying an HD-DVD player (and movies) was more a way of me trying to support the format I believe in with my money, than thinking it would absolutely win. Again, I should remind you that if I really wanted, I could put the HD-DVD player back in the box today, take it back, and get my money back.

That's fine, I'll just download them after they are stripped of their DRM. I didn't buy a 360 or PS3 because I feel they're outdated technology. I just went straight to building a HTPC, and hooked that up to my HDTV. I'll just watch them that way.

No need to justify your actions to me buddy

And I'm pretty sure there are people in this world that we refer to as "gamers", I think they are more interested in what a console can do for gaming and not so much video playback (Why you talk about these GAMING consoles like they are stand alone players is beyond me).

That's true. I only have the following installed on my "video playback" HTPC:

Someday though, I hope that I'll be able to play a lot of the games that are available on video game consoles.

/sigh I can tell I'm going to have to hold your hand through this. There's a difference between console gamers and PC gamers and they generally don't like each other. Are you new to gaming or something?

The first game I can remember playing on my computer is "Paperboy" on our 286. The first console game I remember playing was Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo. So no, I'm not new to either platform.

Obviously there is a difference between a gaming console and a computer, but the two platforms are converging. I went one step ahead and converged them as much as possible for the time-being. The computer is no longer a dedicated computing device, and the console aspect is much more powerful. This is all tied together using Windows Media Center in Vista.

We were at one point talking about foresight. I'm simply trying to convey to you how having a 360 or PS3 is not foresight, it is currentsight...or whatever. Just like still using an MP3 player is not foresight (for God's sake, you have an 8525, go get a 4GB MicroSD card and drop the MP3 player).

Actually I have two 8gb cards, gave the ipod to the wife. I think you have a warped interpretation of foresight. Just because I can forsee movies being downloaded 10 years from now or the elimination of PC vs Console in 10-15 years doesn't mean I should sit on old technology until my foresight becomes reality. That is just idiotic. If I'm a console gamer and I want to play console games NOW how is buying a 360 or PS3 a lack of foresight? You are coming off as very blockheaded right now...

Anyway, this thread is about Blu-Ray winning the format war NOT about this ****

I was looking at the review, and I didn't see an HDMI port in the back. Is that true or I just couldn't see it?

What else is left to discuss on the original subject? Warner switched. It may or may not signal the end of HD-DVD. Some people are glad, others aren't. Anything past that, we're re-hashing what has already been said.
