DVD(upconverted):
Blu Ray:
Notice how crisp everything is. Look at the stacks of the rectangular chips, you can almost count them in the blu ray capture and they are just a blurred mess in the regular dvd shot. The best way I have been able to describe it to people is that it is like when you go to get a new pair of glasses or contacts. Your old pair were fine, but when you switch to the new ones everything is clear and fresh.

Yes, the DVD has been upconverted in the player to 1080p and the blu ray is running at 1080p. Also if you want to see some good blu ray Spiderman 3 is a great demo. It is Sonys first blu ray they did themselves and spared no expense on the transfer. The movie is not that good, but it looks amazing.

I own both Blu-ray Spiderman 3 and Casino Royale. If you want true demo material, watch Pirates of the Caribbean 2, Cars or Ratatoullie... Simply amazing

There's a particular HD photo they have of Nicole Kidman's bare back from Eyes Wide Shut that while acceptable for FTW, I don't want to get anyone in trouble with this thread being NSFW.

Batman Begins is supposed to be mind blowing as well (comes out in 2 weeks I think) and they are working on The Incredibles which should be great as well (all of the Pixar, digital animation stuff looks great in blu ray).
Planet Earth is also a must own, some of the scenes you can tell were shot with first gen HD cameras and a few you can even tell were done on HD film due to the graininess....But 90% of that series is breathtaking.

There is definitely a noticeable difference. I have the HD add on for Xbox 360 and have been blown away by HD movies, not only that but it is by far the best upconverter player I have seen (I also own the oppo which is good but not as clear as the 360 add on)
With the death of HD-DVD and the prices in movies still not going down I think i'm going to dive into the blu ray market. Just having trouble finding a good deal

I thought nicole kidman used a body double for shots like that. She doesn't have a particularly nice rump as far as I remember.

No, I took a particular interest in that scene and I read that that was her.
Eyes Wide Shut actually isn't that great of an example for showing picture quality because it was intentionally grainy because of the way Kubrick shot it.

I completely disagree. I have a 720p DLP, and a 720p LCD Projector. Blu-Ray/HD-DVD completely blow away any upconverted DVD on those units. And that opinion comes from friends/family that are the farthest thing from a videophile.
The opinion is unanimous.

this is good stuff... bought my blu-ray player about 2 weeks ago. It gets installed (with the rest of my home theater system) next Wednesday... Cannot wait.
