Newspaper story 40-Hour Laptop Batteries

Holy crap I'm lucky if mine lasts 3 hours

Breakthrough Could Mean 40-Hour Laptop Batteries (NewsFactor) by NewsFactor: Yahoo! Tech

Imagine running your laptop nonstop from New York to Tokyo -- crunch some numbers, work on a memo pop in a few DVDs -- and then do a full day of meetings, using your machine throughout the day and into the night. Imagine doing all this without ever plugging in your computer to recharge its battery.
This scenario may become reality in the near future, if Stanford University scientists succeed in commercializing a breakthrough in the laboratory. Assistant Professor Yi Cui and associates at Stanford's Department of Materials Science and Engineering said they have developed a method to increase the life of rechargeable lithium ion batteries to a whopping 40 hours.

IF that works don't you think an electric car would be the better application?

Oh yes, porn is much more important. I agree. Maybe this breakthrough could be used in the porn industry.

But seriously, it seems like i hear these stories every year. Why does it take so long for this to come to the market? It seems like if this was as promising as it sounds, it would be rolled out within months. Oil companies are afraid. They are probably paying this guy off right now so it never sees the light of day.

This is an interview with the researcher on this. He sounds pretty pumped up about it all. He explains how they work and gives some statistics. Says it will be 5 years though till they are practical.

I agree....Didn't Toshiba make some totally amazing battery breakthrough a year or so ago ...supposedly a 10 hour battery that recharges in less than 10 minutes or something...this was supposed to create such a demand that Toshiba was going to leapfrog Dall and Gateway and Hp and all others ...

what happened to that?
