This movie was from like 1956 or thereabouts and Jim Hutton and some others were MSU students in Florida during spring break.
EDIT: 1960
Did they ever explicitly state that the students were from MSU? I've heard from reliable MSU sources that the opening scene with the students freezing in swirling snow was filmed outside the MSU Union, but I thought the narrator referred just to a "Midwestern university." Geez, MSU would've had what, 7500 students in 1960?
I also heard that crowd sounds for a movie -- maybe Spartacus, that'd make sense -- were taped in Spartan Stadium. As the story goes at halfime they had the crowd roar in certain ways to fit the script.
in one of the Back to the Future movies, i am more than positive there were a couple Michigan State football references. i think it was when they were finding out that the sports almanac was actually from the future.

Yes, they were mentioning college football scores when Biff was driving and Marty was shagging his car on his hover board.

That was the first one that came to mind. At Max & Erma's in Eastwood, on the bar side, there is a program from that game on the wall.
Also West Wing had a few references.

My buddy met Caan a couple of years ago in California... My friend said Caan was actually wearing a State shirt, so he approached him when he saw that.

The LA Club meets at some bar near Hermosa Beach or something like that...anyways, my buddy was hanging out and in walks MSU Alum Christina Aguilera and a friend of hers. They sat down and cheered MSU on. She got a call from another celeb and she said, "Yeah, MSU is winning. I told you we'd win this game...[pause]...Oh, I'm counting my eggs and they're hatching...we're GOING to win this game." She only stayed for about 15 minutes of the game though, he said.

John T. Madden
Ordinary People (1980)
Conrad Jared (played by Timothy Hutton) is approached in his bedroom one afternoon by his father, Calvin Jared (played by Donald Sutherland), who tells him "hey Connie, I was able to get those Michigan State tickets". This was the immediate aftermath of the Magic/Kelser NCAA championship in 1979. In another ironic twist, the movie was filmed on location in Lake Forest, IL, where my Sister In Law and her family lived 2 years, and she graduated from the actual high school where much of the film was shot, before moving on to MSU herself.
Rudy (1993)
Rudy Ruettiger (played be Sean Astin) is sitting in a bar shortly after arriving in South Bend, and at the beginning of one scene says "Now there's a game to remember, 1966 against Michigan State. Bob Gladieux caught the greatest pass in Notre Dame's football history!"
Hoop Dreams (1994)
William Gates is being interviewed in his bedroom at the beginning of his junior year at St. Joseph HS (Westchester, IL) while going through his many recruiting letters. The scene begins with him reading out loud a letter from Georgetown, afrer which he says "...Bobby Knight called...Michigan State, boy, do they EVER call!" A few seconds later, he shows the camera a brochure about MSU basketball with the Breslin Center featured prominently on the cover (It says "Michigan State Spartans")
Knute Rockne All American (1940)
At the end of the movie, a voice over tribute to Rockne rattles off several names and schools explaining what many of his former players and coaching proteges ("these are Rockne's boys") were doing at that time in college football: "...Charley Bachman, Michigan State...(former MSC Head Coach and Notre Dame Four Horseman) James Crowley, Fordham..."

Marvelous technology is at our disposal. But instead of reaching up to new heights, we want to see how far down we can go. How deep into the muck we can immerse ourselves.

In the HORRIBLE TV series, "Parker Lewis can't lose" the BIG guy, Kubiak was a football player and he was trying out for some college scouts, one had on MSU gear.

"I couldn't do it last night."
"You mean sexually?"
"No, for the big game against Michigan State. Of course sexually!"
Another Billy Crystal movie...in When Harry Met Sally...
there is a scene wear he's talking to Sally about a girl he just took out on a date. He mentions that during the conversation she said she went to MSU. This throws him into a frenzy, says it remind him of his ex-wife. Sally's like "wtf? your ex-wife went to Northwestern?". Harry says, "Yeah but they're both B10 schools."
There was an old movie I was watching the other night that had an obscure MSU reference, now I can't remember what it was
I was watching MXC (most extreme elimination challange) and when a Chinese girl was about to get raped by the float or sink game, the voice over said "Michigan State! Go Spartans!"
I can't think of two groups that I would want representing us less than these two. This is worse than the pub Michael Moore gives us. Wow.
definitely not worse than michael moore though
