About 2 weeks ago a great tv show, BURN NOTICE, had Michael (the main character who is a 'burned' ex CIA spy) under cover trying to piss off a civilian engineer working for the government on a top secret contract. Michael was acting like a flunkie/drunk and when he found out the guy went to Michigan State he told him: "I went to UofM and my GPA wuz 1.8"... the wife and I howled.... the role of Sam Axe is played by Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame so that could be a link to the Michigan connection...

There was a mistake in the movie Indian Summer. The head of the camp had his boxing trophy stolen. He was the boxing champion of Michigan State University in the early 40's. MSU was MSC at that time.

In 'Trouble Along the Way' (1953) John Wayne plays a football coach. One of his lines is something like "I've just got to find a way to beat Michigan State next year."

I'll echo that I have never seen Tim Allen wear a State shirt on Home Improvement, and I've seen pretty much every school, including Michigan.

I also heard that crowd sounds for a movie -- maybe Spartacus, that'd make sense -- were taped in Spartan Stadium. As the story goes at halfime they had the crowd roar in certain ways to fit the script.
Yes, it's explicitly stated.

The writer of the novel "Where The Boys Are" was the well known writer Glendon Swarthout, was a faculty member at MSU.

And no, MSU got big in the years immediately following WWII. By 1960, MSU had been in the Big Ten for years and was big.

I believe that Swarthout also wrote "The Shootist," by the way.

And yeah, at halftime of an MSU-ND game they led the crowd in the cheers they wanted for Spartacus.

I also don't remember Tim Allen ever wearing an MSU shirt in Home Improvement. It seemed like it was always WMU, Calvin, Alma College, or something.

BUT, I do remember he had an old red, white & blue MI license plate hanging in his garage above the hotrod that read "MSU-###".

Good timing of this thread. I just had VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of the 90s" on for some background noise and reminiscing. In at number 13 was Dr. Dre's "Nothing But a G Thing". They show some clips from the video, then while talking about him, they show some random clip of Dre and Snoop in some fast food place. Not sure where that video is from, but Snoop had on an MSU hat with the block S, equipped with Gruff on the right side.

Correspondence courses? Does MSU offer these to someone who has never enrolled? Sounds to me like a PR move. If the claim that a 'star' went to a large University is called out they can say that the 'star' took correspondence classes.

And an obese slob who leverages himself with unionista grudges. I'm no fan of GM management, but I wish he would lose the "S" cap and.... if he's so concerned about Flint, get his fat ass down from his Northern Michigan retreat and become a "community organizer"
