Last July, Yvonne Jackson, the mother of Devin Ebanks, a swingman who had recently committed to Indiana, was on a cruise in the Caribbean when she received a call from a member of Indiana University's compliance office. "It caught me off guard," says Jackson, who was named in the NCAA's 14-page list of allegations regarding impermissible phone calls by Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson. "They wanted to verify my cell number and Devin's. They were asking me about dates and calls that had been made. I answered to the best of my memory."

The calls in question relate back to Ebanks' recruitment, which, for the most part, took place during the year-long period when Sampson was prohibited from calling recruits or making off-campus visits. In 2006, the NCAA handed down sanctions against Sampson because of the 577 impermissible calls he and his staff made while at Oklahoma before arriving in Indiana. "He made a mistake," Ebanks said of Sampson when he offered his verbal commitment last June. "I've made bad mistakes myself. You still have to give someone a chance."

On Wednesday, Ebanks' did not receive a phone call from Sampson or the staff about the latest list of allegations handed down by the NCAA, which also includes Ebanks' name as a recipient of impermissible calls. Instead, they heard second hand from various news accounts. "Right now we still have yet to make a decision," said Jackson, who also cooperated with the NCAA's investigation, on Thursday morning. "Obviously this is more serious than ever before, but we'll have to talk with the coaches and wait to see if Devin will re-open his recruitment." (Since he signed a Letter of Intent, Ebanks' would need to be released from his letter by Indiana in order to be able to play right away should he decide to go to another school.)

Before the NCAA's allegations were released, Ebanks and his mother were discussing his summer plans. Jackson said Sampson had mentioned he could help Ebanks find a job. There was also a Team USA event Sampson wanted him to participate in. With the revelation of possible further sanctions against Indiana (and the fact that Sampson could lose his job), though, those summer plans, as well as his college destination, may soon change. "We really were not expecting this news," Jackson said. "We haven't spoken with the coaches. We're just waiting on a call now."

Ebanks signed a letter of intent in November, and IU would have to release him before he could play elsewhere.

Whether Ebanks attends is part of the uncertainty surrounding IU after Wednesday's allegations of "major" recruiting violations. Among the possible penalties is a postseason ban, which could devastate recruiting.
If IU is banned from the NCAA Tournament, current high school juniors who made nonbinding oral commitments to IU or are considering playing for IU could decide to go elsewhere. Even the four seniors who signed a binding letter of intent in November could ask to be released.
"I'm really concerned," said Lawrence North center Stephan Van Treese, the state's top-ranked junior and one of the nationally ranked players in his class considering IU.
"If they have violations that they can't go to the tournament, why would I want to go there? The main thing I want to do when I go to college is play in the tournament. I think a lot of players feel the same way."
Tipton forward Derek Elston, another player ranked among the top 100 in the junior class, still plans to attend IU, his father said.
"I still think that he's very committed," Darrell Elston said. "If something serious would happen, we'd have to step back and look at other options, but as of right now, he's really committed."
The two most important recruiting periods are April and July, when coaches watch dozens of players at national events. With an NCAA committee meeting in June to discuss the allegations and prospects unsure what penalties IU might face, Sampson and his staff can't guarantee them the Hoosiers will be eligible for postseason play.
"I think it's tough to convince a top-level prospect who has other options to go to a school where there's a good chance you won't get to participate in the postseason," said Jerry Meyer, recruiting analyst for rivals.com.
"You're going to have to find prospects who are loyal fans of Indiana or have dreamed of playing at Indiana."
IU's 2008 class includes no players from Indiana high schools.
Bob Gibbons, a nationally respected recruiting analyst, said any serious sanctions could hamper IU's future efforts.
"Rival recruiters would have a field day going in and talking not about only sanctions and postseason bans, but the coach's job security and, 'Do you want to go to a program that functions that way?' and pointing out past histories," Gibbons said.
The allegations already have some well-connected in-state coaches wondering if they should trust their players to Sampson.
Jim Reamer has coached Marquette star Dominic James, IU starting point guard Armon Bassett and others during spring and summer events.
Reamer pointed to several aspects of Bassett's experience as positive but added he now has questions about Sampson. "If he's willing to be dishonest with the people above him, how easy is it to be dishonest with the people below him?" Reamer asked. "You wonder if that's the kind of program you want kids to play in."

Indiana's top basketball signee, Devin Ebanks, was released from his letter-of-intent on Wednesday and will explore other options.

Ebanks said he will try and take a few visits in the next month. The four schools he's considering are Texas, Memphis, Rutgers and West Virginia.

"Those are my top four and the only ones I'll look at," he added. "I'm going to schedule visits to all four of them."

Well Rutgers is the only team on that list that was on his list when he choose Indiana. He choose Indiana over Rutgers and Miami (FL). When I look at that list though now with Huggins and Calipari I have a hard time thinking he will go to Rutgers. Rutgers did just get a real good '09 Commit though.

According to reliable reports out of New York and confirmed by Ebanks’ coach at St. Thomas More, Jere Quinn, Memphis is actively courting Ebanks. Quinn also confirmed he’ll be meeting with Ebanks and Ebanks’ “AAU people,” including Lawrence McGugins, the head of Team Takeover, this week. “We’re going to try and make a quick assessment of what they’re trying to do,” Quinn said. “We’re hoping to get together soon. Memphis has contacted us,” Quinn said. “I know they’ve contacted his [Ebanks’] AAU people.”

Aside from the underbelly of college recruitment as conducted in the shadows by surrogates to teenage prodigies like Ebanks, it’s clear an issue has arisen. According to most reports, IU hasn’t formally released Ebanks from his National Letter of Intent nor has Ebanks formally requested such release as required by the NCAA.
