New dollar coins
I got one of these as change today at - go figure - the Post Office. Other than there and banks, NOBODY uses these things. How many more times are they going to try to get us to use them? And how long before they figure out that it might be smart to not make them nearly identical to quarters?

I gave one to a bum once, and he looked at me all pissed because he thought is was just a quarter. I told him to "look again, it's a dollar" and he was stunned.
I saw him drunk and happy about 23 minutes later.

I had the same thing happen to me with one of the vending machines at the post office. Now I know to always have exact change with me.

Well if the dollar keeps falling through the floor the way it has been, then dollar coins might start to catch on since they'll be worth approx a quarter of what they were worth 10-15 years previous.

This is the third attempt to reintroduce dollar coins. The past two times the coins were ugly (Susan B. Anthony & Sacagawea), about the size of quarters, and they tarnished so they began to look like dirty pennies.
At least this time they are putting presidents on them. But they still make them too small, and they tarnish. If a dollar coin must be circulated, I say bring back the old "silver dollars" that we had when I was a kid. They were big enough to distinguish them from other coins, and they held up well.

these work pretty damn well also:
If we do it the right way and phase out the dollar then it will work, otherwise it's a waste of money by the US.

If you really hate coins, never visit any country in the Europen Union. I worked in Germany for six months last year, and keeping your coinage down is such a chore. They have EIGHT: 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00.

The dollar bill is just a waste of money to print. The average life on one is only 21 months before they get shredded whereas a one dollar coin would last about 25 years.

There you go.
The Loony is greater than the almighty (dollar)
I still see books priced at, say, US$7.95 and CAD$ 8.95. Weird.

I think the UK has the most valuable coin, the 2 UKP (worth around $4)
or if you prefer, the country with the highest "lowest value" circulating note, the 5 UKP

I was in Europe once and went to a strip club. Of course we were all wondering "If there are no dollar bills (err, Euro Bills)....how do we give the chicks money? I mean....do they have a coin purse? We sure as hell aren't slipping a 5 Euro note worth 7 dollars into any underwear!"
So we get there and we ask the manager or whoever is taking cover at the door, "So...how do we give the money to the girls while they are dancing? Do they have a coin purse or.....?" The dude stairs at us blank faced. Then says "Just pay them the money after your lap dance." I say, "ya...but what about while they are dancing? What if we don't GET lap dances, yet still wanna slide them a Euro or two?" Dude says "why would you come here if you weren't gonna get lap dances?"
So we shrug and sit down. Needless to say he was right. If you didn't want a lap dance it was useless since they only had a girl dancing on stage for about 5% of the time. The rest of the time they were badgering you about lap dances. They really need to learn how to run a strip club over there.

Save them and when you get to the point where your grandkids turn 5, start giving the coins to them as special treats. The happiness they experience from receiving the coins will create immense value for you.

Exactly. With Debit cards and electronic transfers becoming commonplace, you will see the eventual elimination of physical currency.

Not sure why they keep making the dollar coin, if they aren't really serious on making everyone use it.
It is really pretty simple ... If they really wanted to make people use the dollar coin, all they have to do is stop making the paper dollar (and even more so ... stop making them and start taking the existing ones out of circulation)
