Off-topic Handguns for the range

Hey is anyone on here pretty familiar with handguns? I am going to get one to take to the range. I was thinking about getting a Glock 19. Anyone have any experience with this handgun. Anyone have a Taurus i was considering a similar model made by them. Thanks any input is appreciated.

If you are mostly looking for range fun, stay with 9mm (luger) or 22 rimfire. You will save a lot of money.

That said; The Glock 19 is a great gun.

I have only dry fired the Taurus 24/7 but Taurus' are good guns on the inexpensive side. Built like tanks and they work well for the price but they aren't as polished as other makers (IMHO).

In 9mm, I personally would stick with Glock, Sig Sauer or Springfield Armory.

Currently, in 9mm, I have both a Taurus Millennium and a Springfield XD-9 Service model (4" barrel). I have shot both the Glock and the Sig and personally like the XD a bit more. If I picked a 2nd, I would go with the Sig.

Pick a good first gun, and soon you will find you have a collection of them.

Enjoy and be safe.

Go GLOCK

I have owned several guns over the years and I say go with the GLOCK.

I owned a GLOCK 19 and now I have the GLOCK 22 (.40 cal.). To keep costs down 9mm ammo is pretty cheap for target shooting. The GLOCK is also very simple for cleaning. There are basically four basic parts that you have to worry about for routine cleaning.

I owned a Taurus and the statement "you get what you pay for" applies. The mechanisms are not as smooth and I had some serious repairs that needed to be done at one point. It was a snub nose .38 revolver, but I was not impressed. I sold it cheap because I bought it cheap.

You will not be disappointed if you buy a GLOCK.

I prefer .45 to 9mm, that said, SIG is the best. Glocks are nice but overrated. The best bang for the buck is going with a Ruger.

If you're just planning on just going to the range, get a .22, it will be a lot cheaper.

I'm gonna have to agree and say go SIG. Try the Mosquito, its a .22lr (cheaper ammo) or maybe a p226 or 228 in 9mm. Haven't shot the new p250 yet though.

If Sig is out then go with a Glock or XD. As mentioned, I shot both, and I like the feel of the XD. My XD with the Case, XD gear and an attachable tatical light was just over $500.

With the Glock you will have the option to customize a bit more, but that said there is only so much you can do to a handgun.

On my XD-9, I did upgrade to fiber optic sites and had the trigger reduced to 3.5lbs. It is great!! About the only gun that will out shoot it is the Sig's, and they are only a bit better.

Unless you HAVE to have the giant bang, get something shooting .22 caliber. I have other guns but my Tauras Model 94 is great because I get to smile as I shoot as much as I want. Sometimes I get the sense that guys shooting the larger calibers almost feel like they are shooting dollars instead of bullets.

Plus its great to have the oppurtunity to shoot 150 rounds and really practice for accuracy. Not sure how much you can practice if you only want to shell out cash for a few rounds.

You're going to end up with multiple guns anyway...

If you have not shot alot I agree get a 22, the rugar semi auto target is great. If you are mechanical, any all steel clone of the 1911 45 auto is a great start as many gunnie parts are available and nothing shoots smother and it is fun to work on. If you might be interested in reloading, a rugar single action 45 long colt is great as there is lots of room for powder and with low power loads is quite accurate. for self defense a 357 revolver with the rugar slide bar safety is the way to go and you can shoot 38's to go light. get a heavy all steel gun , dont get alum. or plastic for the range as the added weight will work well in large cal. you are not carrying it far. see what clubs or events go on in your area, for cowboy shooting you want the single action 45 long colt, if there are a lot of mil people you want a 1911- 45 . but get the 22 anyway

As somebody who owns...uhm...a number of guns...I can say that all of the guns mentioned will work for you. 22's are certainly cheaper to shoot but 9's make a bigger boom and can double as a self-defense gun. While I personally carry a .45, a 9 will do the job with proper ammo and shot placement. A Glock 19 (which I have) is probably the most simple, reliable, and durable 9 out there for the money. While you won't go wrong with an XD, a G19 will serve you well also.

Thanks for the advice. I am looking to get something bigger than a .22 I am looking for something a little more powerful because i will eventually get a ccw. I have been shooting rifles my whole life and am looking to get into pistol shooting. I think im going to get the Glock 19. From a little bit of research and what you guys have said seems like a great gun. Thanks again one day i may pony up the cash for a Sig.

Lots of good information (and a bunch of idiots... but surprisingly few schticks) on both of the top forums. You will find loyal believers for each brand at both of these sights.

There are so many factors to consider when purchasing a firearm.

You state you want something for the range.

Is this for competitive target shooting? IPSC or IDPA? Something you may want to eventually carry?

Just want a production firearm or something customized and accuratized?

Regarding you Glock suggestion, there are alot of fans of the plastic gun, but you really have to try different firearms for what is comfortable to you.

The Glocks square grip for instance v. the Berreta 92FS or Taurus knockoff, are quite different. Those trigger safeties v. a decocker, a safety, or none at all.

Hey the most important factor is that is goes bang when you pull the trigger. The rest of it is personal preferences based on your personal preferences and intended use.

Go to range that has a wide assortment to try and try them all.

As far as caliber, 9mm is still relatively inexpensive, although we all have seen prices skyrocket. 9mm is still has stopping power.

Not only do you have to be able to operate and put rounds on our intended target, carry comfort is another question. How do you anticipate carrying?

I carry IWB and carry a CZ 75D Compact in 9mm. A full size handgun is not something easily concealed. Of course, assuming your in Michigan, open carry, while legal, will bring the unwanted attention of the government your way.

Contact MCRGO. They used to have a Tuesday night deal where they would allow new shooters to try alot of different firearms in a variety of calibrs at no cost (although one would have to be an ********* not to offer to pay for the rounds).

Do you just shoot for fun at a range or do you carry a concealed piece on you? As an avid hunter I am a supporter of guns but sometimes I wonder why people carry concealed pieces which make them a target to get shot by criminals and by police.

No, I do not carry a concealed weapon. I feel no reason to carry one right now. I do plan on eventually obtaining a ccw but for now i just enjoy going to the range and target shooting.

If your looking for strictly a range gun I would recommend a 9 mm or a .22 to save $$$$. I have a glock 19 - its a very good gun. I prefer my Springfield XD45 Tactical though.
