RCMB charity bowling/softball weekend (Help pick a date)
Okay, so I'm going to work on securing facilities this week for bowling and for softball, but I need to know what days people would be able to participate. The original idea was to do softball on day 1, allow everyone to get cleaned up before they head to the bar, 21yr+ posters get their drink on, and if they want they can show up mildly hungover at the bowling alley on day 2 and use the hair of the dog if necessary without worrying about doing anything strenuous (maintaining balance while bowling might be another matter). If people want to make an all-day thing out of it, that's fine too, I leave it to the people.
Two other things I should bring up: First, we might open the bowling tourney up to the public since we won't have to worry about anything like playing time, jerks taking things way too seriously, etc., and it would also bring in more $. The second thing is that, since some people aren't interested in bowling and some aren't interested in softball, we probably should do this a la carte. If you play in either baseball or softball, donate a minimum $30, play in both and donate a minimum $45. Or something. I don't want to price anyone out, but at the same time the point is to generate money that can be part of a $30,000 endowment to MSU. Have at it

*shrugs* I'm okay with opening it up for dates. The important points:
1) Not overpacking peoples' schedules. With the Toledo Mudhens thing on August 23rd and the 4th of July on, well, July 4th, I'd like to space things out.
2) I want to set the details by end-of-week. I'll be fronting the money for any reservations (we're looking at Kircher Field, the place next to Red Cedar GC with the lights, PA, scoreboard, etc, and Holiday Lanes), and the sooner the better.
The plan on the mod board right now looks something like this:
Friday afternoon/evening: Bowling event (possibly opened to the public since very few people take bowling too seriously and those who do can be mocked mercilessly)
Friday night: Drinking and general revelry
Saturday morning: recover from hangover
Saturday afternoon: Softball event (RCMBish only) - projected announcing team of phoneman and Fletch (now we need an Erin Andrews)
So let's hear it, what dates are going to work for people?

Kircher is a baseball field. Ranney Park near Frandor has all the same ammenities but is actually a softball field... and it's closer to Holiday.
Also, Holiday will probably cut you a deal if you tell them it's for charity.

Greater Lansing Sports Authority has it listed for softball. Couldn't find a listing for Ranney Park, but I know where you're talking about. Are they owned by either of the City governments? In either case, the location isn't going to matter much since they're literally a quarter mile from each other and we'd be doing these things on separate days (so it doesn't have to be right next to Holiday lanes). I just thought of Kircher because it looks really cool and far more importantly is right next to Oade's. Price will be the clincher unless there's some giant difference I'm missing.
--edit-- Okay, found the giant difference using the google maps satellite.
Ranney: 200ft to the wall
Kircher: 325ft to the wall
Depending on turnout it might almost be better if we did Kircher. I'd hate to tell 4-8 people to sub out or even worse not play at all after donating. At Kircher we would be able to do an extra outfielder or something. Ah well, this is just idle guessing right now, first thing is to find out the costs of reserving both for a game.

I'll work on getting Erin there
Why break up the events over two days? Why not have the softball game earlier in the day (1 ish), and then go straight to bowling after??
I'm not sure I would want to play softball with a bad hangover . . .

Apparently Negotiator can't figure out how to edit a post to add a poll
Putting up weekend options, hold on...
(vote for as many weekends as are available)

You should be able to have 4 outfielders at Ranney, too... it's like any other softball field. It's a Lansing City park. Kircher has a grass infield and raised mound, so it's really not designed for slow pitch or softball of any kind. I mean, it doesn't really matter to me because I'm probably not coming, but I know I wouldn't want to play softball on a baseball field.

I'd rather bowl hungover than play softball hungover. (Though depending on how hungover, the sound of the pins clanking around might cause headache issues. )

I was the PA announcer @ Muni last summer for City league/30+/40+ baseball and while I would like to play I could run the board and PA for the game if nessisary. Ranney can't be used for slow pitch. The place is tiny and the game would turn into the Legends & Celebrety game (homer-fest during All-Star weekend) in no time.
Muni tends to be busy during the weekends in the summer. There are Saturday evening/night double headers most weeks & Sundays are booked solid with a triple (occasional quad) headers every week (besides holiday weekends). If you need help getting in touch with someone about renting out a field I've got the phone numbers.

If the fence really is 200, a pop fly to the shortstop would be a homer. Normal co-ed softball fields are usually between 250-300.
I have a hundred softballs and about 20 bats I can bring.

You might check Sharp Park in Delta Township, too. It's realtively close to Royal Scot.

Judging by the lack of responses to this thread, do we even have enough people to field a team(s)???

You will. I voted, I'm just indifferent to when it is. I can't do anything in August, but besides that, I'd make the jaunt up to EL to play softball, but certainly not to bowl.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering/worrying about. I have an interview today, I'll check Ranney on my way to make sure the fence is as close as I think it is, then call up Lansing to get info on cost and whether they have dates that are available. Once we have a date and location, I'll put up a signup thread and work from there. I'll do the same for the bowling event and make a separate thread for that to clear up confusion that while both will be available for the weekend, this won't be an all-or-nothing weekend.
