You may want to try Old US 12:

Old U.S. 12 in According to Kara ... runs from downtown Detroit to Chicago. It was replaced by Interstate 94 in 1962, and the state of Michigan re-routed the U.S. 12 designation to the former route of U.S. Highway 112.
It was an old highway that ran through the middle of the major towns and cities of Michigan between Detroit and Chicago. In most cases the road is still there, and is named either Michigan Avenue, Old U.S. 12 or the Red Arrow Highway, named after the 32nd Infantry Division[2]. It is still possible to drive the highway from downtown Detroit all the way to The Magnificent Mile in Chicago, with only a few places in which one is required to navigate around the interstate highway. The major break in Old U.S. 12 is in the middle of Michigan half way between the village of Parma and the city of Albion. It is at this point that I-94 cuts south to some degree and bisects the old highway, forcing a motorist to navigate north on smaller roads.
Prior to 1956, the Detroit-Ann Arbor segment of U.S. 12 was routed directly through Ann Arbor, through Plymouth Township, Livonia, and Redford Township, into Detroit, along the Plymouth-Ann Arbor Road corridor to Plymouth Road's eastern terminus at U.S. 16, Grand River Avenue. U.S. 12 continued on Grand River Avenue, co-signed with U.S. 16, into downtown Detroit. Except for the co-signed Grand River Avenue segment, this route was designated as M-14 when U.S. 12 was rerouted to the Detroit Industrial and Willow Run Expressways, which became I-94 in 1962.
The highway is considered an important historic road like Route 66. Some of it had been the original Territorial Road of Michigan laid out in the early 1800s.

I grew up in Jackson and traveled US 12 quite a bit, there are some neat historic places along the route, but don't be rushed for time! You will end up behind a slow tractor trailer or maybe even a tractor. Stop at Freddies Freeze in Somerset Freddies Freeze - Somerset Michigan - Food, Sandwiches, Ice Cream

As someone noted before check out the Irish hills stagecoach stop, MIS, then Freddies Freeze for lunch. West of there it gets a lot more agricultural as opposed to wooded. Too bad you aren't going through in the fall Flavor Fruit Farms grow excellent apples.

A more interesting way (and much faster) to get into downtown Chicago from Route 12 and/or 95th street area is to take Stony Island to Lake Shore Drive.

You can stop at Moo and Oink.

Two other places worth noting: The Saucy Dog in Jonesville and The Tasty Nut Shop in White Pigeon. Saucy Dog has great brisket and pulled pork. The Nut Shop has roasted nuts of all types and chocolate covered nuts- don't miss the white chocolate turtles. YUM!!

So, did you make it to Chicago on 12? And how long did it take you? I'm only commenting because we go a few times a year, and this time...I happened to see your thread and asked tHubby if he ever took 12 to Chicago. He said no, we took our usual route. We get there and we're swimming in the pool...and my sister-in- law shows up...all frazzled....the drive, tHubby, the kids, etc.etc. I said we didn't have any problems, what did you take...12 all the way here or something, and she said...as a matter of fact, yes we did...how did you know?

or even better, don't get on 95th at all, follow US 41 instead.

I've taken US-12 all the way from Chicago to Berrien County, it was fun but slow in places. It's nice if you have a little time and want to get away from the traffic of 94 though. (and you save nearly $4 in tolls vs. the nearby skyway / tollroad combo)
