Girl Wins State Track Team Championship...By Herself

ESPN - Richardson, only one from school to qualify for state, wins track team title - High School Sports

Quote:
Richardson's title march began with field events on Friday when she won the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches), placed second in the long jump (18-7) and was third in the discus (121-0).
On Saturday, she won the 200 meters in 25.03 seconds and nearly pulled off a huge upset in the 100 before finishing second (12.19) to defending champion Kendra Coleman of Santa Anna. Richardson, a junior, earned a total of 42 team points to edge team runner-up Chilton (36).

That is extremely impressive. Especially in a huge state like Texas that has a great amount of talented athletes to win the 1A state title by herself....holy crap!

I hate to bring this up...but, didn't Tyrone Wheatley do this?

In the mid or early 90's New Haven won three state titles in a row in Michigan with 4 kids. Not as impressive as the one girl here, but pretty damn impressive.

Being a TF person, those aren't great marks. The HJ mark is okay and the LJ is decent but 121' isn't that impressive in the disc.

I ran against NH in 90. They were very fast.

Not as fast as Flint Beecher, but they ruled the STA.

In Texas, 1A is the smallest division - equivalent to Class D schools in Michigan.

As for her marks - each of them would have been good enough for a top 5 finish in Michigan's Division 1 last year.

That's sad. The quality of HS T&F in MI is crap.

I didn't know Texas 1a was the smallest..None the less, I think that is amazing. Her marks may not be that great to the man behind the computer...but, to do that in what the article said was some tough heat is very impressive. As for it being top 5 in MI..wow....Congrats to you.

Back in the mid 1990's, daughter was on her high school math team and she single handedly beat the entire Lane Tech (Chicago) team.

Not a sports event, but we were still mighty proud of her!

Huge accomplishment. I can only imagine telling your children and grandchildren you won the state team title in Texas all by yourself.

You are correct. Class B in '88 I believe. Won the 100, 200, 110 hurdles, and 300 hurdles. Robichaud won the team title by 9 points I think.

You are wrong. He won the long jump and the 100.

Well, that's not exactly true. She won two events. That's legit. But to say she would have been top five in michigan is a bit of a stretch. Her times and/or length in field events is very comparable in Division 4 as well, it depends on the event. And due to parity, winning two events was enough to win the team title. I have watched individuals win 4 events at the state championship meet.....everything is relative. Michigan is every bit as good as Texas in most events.

I was in the stands watching. It was actually 1990, Tyrone's junior year, and he won the 100, 200, 110 hurdles and long jump. It was one of the most impressive feats I've ever witnessed in high school sports.

His senior year he won all of the same events again, except for the 200.

Interesting story from the state finals in his junior year though. First of all, keep in mind that Tyrone hadn't lost a single race in the 200 (prelims, semis or finals) since he was a sophomore at Robichaud. It was the semis of the 200 meters and Tyrone, as usual, was again WAY out ahead of everyone as they came down the stretch...so he naturally began to coast the last 40 - 50 meters. Well some kid who was a ways back in 2nd place decided that he wanted to beat the great Tyrone Wheatley so instead of just coasting as well, qualifying and then taking his place in the finals, he decided to turn on the after burners and act like this was the finals. So he caught up to him catching him by surprise and you could tell Tyrone tried but he just didn't have enough time to get up to speed and the guy beat him by a quarter a second...and then he celebrated like he actually won something important. Tyrone was pissed.

So fast forward to the 200 meter finals and everybody is expecting a heavyweight bout between Tyrone and this kid who beat him in the semis. The gun goes off and every single person in the grandstand stands up to watch. They're coming down the stretch, just the two of them, neck and neck...15 meters ahead of everyone else. And then right when they're in the middle of the grandstand with about 50 meters to go, Tyrone literally turns his head to side and looks at the kid for a couple of strides and then just TAKES OFF and goes on to beat him by like 4 or 5 meters.

Just an insane performance by a high school athlete. He totally set that kid up from the start and made him look like a fool. He was a freak of an athlete. It's something I'll never forget.

You obviously didn't understand what I stated........you were very cute for copying Division 1 results; now look at the same events in the other divisions and you will 'hopefully' understand what I was stating. There are individual times and performances that are better , regardless of class, in particular events. In other words, Division 1 was not a 'great' year for certain events, like the ones performed by the Texan, as opposed to other divisions.
I won't bother pasting any due to the fact that I KNOW this...........you can look it up since you already visited the site.

First off, I specifically said Division 1 - you then said "top 5 in Michigan."

But since you were such a smarmy bastard about it... I did check.

In the Discus, there were 15 distances better than hers across the state finals last year... but almost all of those were in D2. She would have easily been Top 5 in any other division. Her throw would have been a record in some UP divisions (separate championship).

In the High Jump, there were only 3 jumps higher than hers across all divisions. She would have won Divisions 2 or 3. Her jump woud be a Division 3 state record and a record in some UP divisons.

In the Long Jump, there was one jump higher than hers across all divisions. She would have easily won divisions 2, 3, or 4. Her jump would be a state record in several divisions (LP UP).

In the 200, there were 3 times faster than hers across all divisions. She would have won divisions 3 and 4. Her time would be a state record in several divisions (LP and UP).

In the 100, there was 1 time faster than hers across all divisions. She would have won divisions 2, 3, and 4. Her time would be a state record in several divisions (LP and UP).

Only in the all-time, all-class, all-meets lists would her times and distances not be among the best. But since a fair number of those seem to be 20 and 30 years old, the comparison doesn't seem very fair. The high jump list has been broken once in this decade - the long jump list hasn't been touched this decade. The discus list has only two entries from this decade. The 200 has only two entries from this decade. The 100 has zero.
