Weak. I expect better from you that a desperate stretch like this.

Did the wait staff have suspenders on with several pieces of "flare"?

Yeah I thought the same thing. Because of that I figured out an appropriate response.

Why play against type?

Now, I am no fool. I would agree that there are better odds that a lynch mob gets going in Texas over Michigan. However, as far as across the board general racism I literally could not tell you which state is worse. Northernors need to get off their high horse when it comes to this stuff.
You obviously haven't spent much time in rural/northern Michigan. They don't mind a good lynch mob or cross burning once in a while up there.

Sadly its going to take a couple more generations in this country before stigmas like this completely go out the window.

Many in our grandparents generation have racist beliefs. To a lesser degree people in our parents generation have racist views (note, I am 35 and I'm talking the age range of 25-40 or so here). IMHO you have to get further and further away from these generations before racist views completely go out the window. The grandparents spout off racist stuff to teh parents who do it to their kids and so on. I know I have sadly heard it from both generations behind me and I know I will NEVER allow it to be said to my child.

Unfortunately the south is a beast all unto itself when it comes to racism.

BTW, for further proof that subtle racism at the very least is alive and well in this country look no further than the Dem primary and all subtleties that have gone on there.

Good lord you're a sensitive little girl.... sorry for not being PC, and actually being honest. And my "diehard black supporter" friend is about the blackest guy that you can find in Detroit, and when he has bagged white girls I've given him props.

I have little doubt the latter happens quite a bit.
Its not "in your face" racism and it may even be anti foreigner bias, but it is real. When I walk into the meetings, the look on their faces give them away immediately. They were not expecting an angry white guy! They give my kids lower grades than the others, pick on them in class, refuse to help them or answer questions.

I grew up in the da UP, my father worked with the job corp program in the 60's and many of the troubled kids came out of Detroit. He would bring some of black kids home for Thanksgiving or Easter. They were my age or just a little older and of course they complained about their situation. They said they would run away but were afraid to. I asked them why they were afraid and if it was because of the police or the Yoopers, they said "We are not afraid of the people up here, they have been friendly, we are afraid of the mosquitoes and the woods"

I don't think or have any hope that racism will ever go away.
Wow, can I relate to that. My kid kept getting beaten up on the playground and the principal (very attractive white woman) said he had to "learn how to get along better with the other children". In a Huckabee-level lame attempt to prove how down she was with the situation, she told how she was taunted as a child by being called "darkie" (she was a hot blonde). I felt like jumping across the desk and choking her, but I just walked out.

The most insidious racism in schools comes from the white teachers who put"working to ability" on a minority kid's report card when they come home with a C+. The assumption is that black/latino kids are stupid, even when they're testing out at 98 percentile on the intelligence/achievement tests.

I faced quite a few situations similar to yours, and just for the record, the school officials enabling the situation to fester were invariably prototype Massachusetts liberals. Hypocrisy of the highest order.

It wasn't exactly dating, but I hung out with a black young lady a few times back in the late 70s. Remember a restaurant called Cork and Cleaver? When a friend saw me there with her, his eyes registered surprise, but I think mostly because she was a very good looking young lady.

I grew up in Alabama. Our high school was integrated, but kids pretty much gathered with their own race. Still, I do not recall any overt hostility between the races. One of my best teachers ever was black, a fellow named Mr. Henry, taught chemistry. I remember he called on every student by last name.

One summer I worked in a factory in my home town, and got to be friends with a black guy, who eventually advised me that I should not take breaks with him any more, because the white supervisors were looking down on me for that. I did not even notice that was happening, and that hurt a lot to realize how backwards things were.

In the decades since, when I have gone back down South, I've found people of mixed races hanging out. Kids at the mall. Obviously mixed race couples, mostly young, some older. Progress may be slow, but there is progress.

Some black folks say that the South is better because the racism is overt, so you understand it and deal with it. Up north, it is subtler and more behind your back.

I am not doubting the story that started this thread, but I do claim that those women who were staring were very, very small people, and I think society is a bit wiser than it was in the 50s or 60s with regard to race.
