Muskegon Spartans...
tGirlfriend just got a job in Muskegon and we're now look for an apartment out there. If any of you have/are living in apartments in Muskegon let me know where to look or avoid. If you live in a house you can still pitch in by letting me know what areas (if any) are ghetto and should be avoided or especially nice. Thanks.

How nice of a place are you looking for and what's your price range?

$700 is roughly the ceiling for price (not counting utilities), we'd like to get as nice of a place as we could. Based on some looking online the two we've marked so far are: Tiffany Woods Apartments, and Lake Forest Apartments.

Both of those places are a few blocks away from me. Both pretty nice, though I'd give Lake Forest the edge for being newer. I hate that they're DTN owned, but I had a friend live in one and the apartments have a pretty good setup. There's a really cool new coffeehouse and Tony's Bistro right around the corner and a few new places going in the last time I checked.
Tiffany Woods is right on the edge of "Roosevelt Park", one of those really self-righteous suburb "towns" (eight square blocks?) where the cops have a long, proud reputation of writing tickets for 5 over. But, it's been around a long time and people really seem to like living there.
Either way, Norton Shores is a great community (minus the guy with a big Michigan "M" on his garage door), you're five minutes from the beach, and you'll be a 2-minute drive from groceries (Wal-Mart across the street from a Meijer), $4.00/gallon gas , and places to eat. Definitely check out Pints & Quarts and Mr. Scrib's Pizza.
For the price, it's the best area in Muskegon.
Good Luck.

That sucks they're DTN owned, I wasn't aware of that. My girlfriend and I were wondering about the 'towns' that were only 10 or so blocks in size. Thanks for the info, I'll check out P&Q and Mr. Scribs. I figure I'll bump this later in the day for the day crew.

Good suggestions so far. Here are some more...
Look at the Amazon Building for downtown Muskegon (if you can call it that). They also have some new apartment buildings going up that might be worth a look. it would be kind of fun living next to the Frauenthal. Festivals like Summer Celebration, Irish and Unity would put you in the middle of the action. Downtown Muskegon is rebuilding after the failed mall experiment. It's fun seeing the new buildings going up.
Also, in Spring Lake Twp. there is Woodland Ridge Apartments. It is a mile or two from the beach, and a lot of parks with woods and dunes nearby. Coast Guard Park, North Beach Park, the new North Ottawa Dunes Park which dumps into Hoffmaster State Park. It would be about a 20 minute commute to the Muskegon area. If you are into nature, it would be a good choice.

I forgot to say people live here who work in Muskegon to the north and Grand Haven to the south. It is in between both communities.

Woodland Ridge in Spring Lake Twp. may be higher than $700/mo, but it is a nice area, especially if you like the outdoors. 1 br 1 bath is around $880 according to the website. Lots of duplexes in this area too. If you're looking for an apartment in a house, take a look at Grand Haven West Michigan News from the Grand Haven Tribune a Michigan Newspaper
PM me if you have specific questions about the area.

Take your time and look for a duplex or small house. We rent a two bedroom in Grand Haven for 650/month. I know it's been said, but great area for being outdoors.

Ooh, good call on that.
It's definitely a more artsy area, like he said, the Frauenthal theater, a lot of historical stuff like Hackley Park, the Hackley Museum, the Hackley Library (notice a theme?)... there are a couple of classy restaurants, you'll be next to the arena for Muskegon Fury hockey and Muskegon Thunder (they can't kick field goals because they hit the big scoreboard above the arena ) football. Summer Cel brings a lot of WT but has its moments -- BB King a couple of years ago, Steve Miller, etc.
Other than that, the whole area is still a lot of nothing ever since they tore down the ****ty old mall. The only thing I remember about that place was that they used to have one of those ugly teal-dye fountains like we have outside of the MSU Library
It would be unfair to call it ghetto, but it's definitely an area in a "rebuilding" phase. There's a lot of potential there but who knows when they'll actually make any real progress on it.
On the plus side, those Amazon Apts are REALLY nice and the whole historical building feel is pretty cool.

I grew up in the area. I would not live in downtown Muskegon. It has been "rebuilding" for about 20 years. Norton Shores is a nice area and good for the day to day living. If you are into the nightlife and the beach, I would look to Grand Haven. Only 15-20 minutes from Muskegon.

You may want to consider living in Grand Haven and commuting 15-20 minutes, or perhaps tring North Muskegon. Lotta #^%# in Muskegon proper and immediately adjacent.

Thanks for all the info everyone, I'll start looking at all the recommendations. I figure I'll let you guys know what we ended up choosing here in a few weeks. Hagen, thanks for the condolences, but honestly I can't see it being that much of a step down, as much as I love MSU and East Lansing, I'm ready to get the hell out of this town.

Muskegon is a huge step down. The recommendation here are pretty solid. Grand Haven or Spring Lake should be your first choice. Norton Shores is okay (I grew up there) and the apartments downtown are nice. Stay away from North of Muskegon (except North Muskegon) and Muskegon Heights.

I grew up in Muskegon. I lived in Lake Forest apartments when they WERE new...which was in the late 70's, early 80's.
Muskegon the city ain't that great, but you can't beat the beaches in the summer. I second the Mr. Scribs recommendation, and also recommend G&L.

I think they've all been remodeled or recreated if it's the same Lake Forest Apartments. DTN took over the area and everything is new -- either that or it's a different complex on the same block in that wooded area where D&W used to be.

I heard a family with the last name "Johnson" is selling a house after inheriting a strangely better house in Southern Cal

You clearly are a racist because you put "ghetto" before "/trailer park"
It's time to pack you off to Al Sharpton for his Maoist reeducation--
and by that I mean sensitivity training.

If only there were a way to have both words on top of each other and still be legible.
