If Stoops and Oklahoma haven't signed off on a release Nichol is dead in the water to every school until the Sooners fill out the paper work and forward it to the NCAA offices in Indy.

A release is needed for a transfer? I thought a Letter of Intent was only binding for one year.

Yes. Remember Fat Boy Brian Kelly down in Cinci not giving Anderson his release so that he could come play at MSU? Also, Tubby not letting Crawford go from UK, then turning around and leaving for Minny. clASS act there!

By signing a National Letter of Intent, a prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the designated college or university for one academic year.

The bottom line is that Nichol IS coming to MSU but it seems that it was a little early for an official story to come out on it yet for whatever reasons. The Mag staff is the best there is at covering MSU sports and there is no way they would post a story like that without being 100% sure that it was correct. So for anyone ripping the mag for running a BS story, get ready to eat your words when they are allowed to run with the info.Welcome home Keith.

They didn't run the story. They pulled it. It's not there. So... you pretty much outlined the argument against yourself.

From Rexrode:
Quote:
Also like Don Cousins, Larry Foles made it clear that his son will stay and battle if Keith Nichol ultimately does end up at MSU.
"He doesn't care if it's Terrelle Pryor coming in, he's going to compete," Larry Foles said of son Nick Foles.
He also helped clear up what, exactly, is going on. Mark Dantonio called him Thursday evening and told him to brace himself for some rumors. Then he addressed the possibility that Nichol may transfer from Oklahoma to MSU. He admitted mutual interest but no final decision.
"He said there's a chance that Nichol might come there," Larry Foles said. At this point, all involved parties have been informed as such.
One of the reasons Foles picked MSU was because Nichol opted out of his verbal commitment (given to John L. Smith) and went to Oklahoma. Now Foles is facing the possibility of competing with Nichol, after all.
"He ain't happy," Larry Foles said of Nick. "It's kind of like, you wonder why. But it's not in his control, the only thing in his control is what he does."
And it appears you can count on Kirk Cousins and Nick Foles taking part in it, whether Nichol ends up at MSU, Michigan, Cincinnati or elsewhere. Foles has already played some QB musical chairs and isn't looking for more.
"He thinks (MSU) can go to big-time places, and he wants to be a part of it," Larry Foles said of his son. "He feels like, 'I'm not gonna fight the process anymore. I'm gonna deliver.' "

They obviously ran the story long enough for the whole Spartan internet world to hear about it smart ass. If you were not such an idiot you would also see that they have never printed a retraction saying that they were wrong, all they have said is that they want to have the blessing of the Nichol family before putting the story back up and that is why they took it down in the first place. So like i said before,Nichol is coming to MSU and anyone saying otherwise is flat out wrong and will look like a fool when the Mag is given the go ahead to put the story back up.

Quit getting so upset. I'll believe it when I see it. If I do, neat. If not, whatever.
"Everyone's going to look like a fool!!!!" Jeez, it's an article online, not the apocalypse.

Rexrode's real journalistic work has blown Spartan Magazine's sloppy work out of the water completely. KN may indeed transfer to MSU, but that doesn't change that fact that just about all of Spartan Magazine's points were completely false. . They were lazy and they are now paying the price.
I'm not sure how much I can trust them now in terms of journalistic integrity. Unless there are quotes to back up what they say, I won't believe them.

A tad harse...but I would agree that Rexrode's blogs make more sense of what is going on...regardless of whether KN comes or not

Rexrode has blown your theory out. They were never 100% sure. They were relying on sources that got it wrong. They had no first hand information. Spartan Mag may have been the best but no longer will I consider them to be. I lost of a lot of respect for them as a journalistic entity.
I don't trust them anymore. They are at Hondo's level in my opinion. I wish that wasn't the case because I like Jim Comp's work.
I'm sure by the fall, I will have forgotten about this. I hope so anyways.

You go ahead and keep thinking that way WCS and when it comes out that they were right all along but just published the story before everyone was ready for it to be public you will look like more of an idiot than you already do.

Note to PR, all athletes have to get a release from the school they have been attending on an athletic scholarship to participate at another school. Its just another piece of the fine print contract language the NCAA has written into the LOI and transfer rules to "protect" the athlete which means its one sided in favor of their member schools.

 at KS defending SpartanMag's honor
KN very well may end up at MSU. Obviously it is not at done deal yet and the story was "100%" right, or it would of never of been pulled.

KN was fully entitled to reopen his recruitment and go to Oklahoma. I have no problem with that. He has a truth telling problem. He told everyone at MSU he was still committed even when asked if he wanted to reopen his recruitment.
He essentially accepts his immaturity at handling the recruitment process out of high school in a recent article. I accept that as an apology to the Spartan community.
handled this very well. If he is still prepared to accept KN I think we should be also. I hope has made it clear this will not be easy. Even with Connor Dixon leaving we have a stable of fine QBs and another elite 11 recruit slated to come in next year, so a starting spot at MSU is not guaranteed. If he eventually wins a starting spot and helps the team win it will affirm our head coach's "let the prospects come to us" approach.
That said, I'm not sure we need him. Hoyer gets flak on this board but he had an outstanding year taken as a whole. The two other QBs will continue to compete this season and the incoming recruit will have a chance to start as a freshman if he's all that. Frankly I'd take a lockdown corner or a pair of great D-tackles rather than KN.
On the plus side KN has a lot to prove. That can be a good thing. Unless he stuffers from total insecurity he won't care what we say on the RCMB but the eyes of the Spartan community are on him. The pressure is still going to be there. We'll see what he does with it.

This mess is going to be even funnier when Nichol goes elsewhere. I wonder what will happen to the "I never bashed Nichol" threads.

Pretty sure that it changes nothing. People who keep bashing him have got some growing up to do anyway. I like what we've got at QB right now. With Nichol it makes the QB position stronger. If he goes elsewhere, he's never been quoted as saying that he's coming to MSU. There's just been a lot of talk of it happening. Anyone who bashes him again for "getting their hopes up" is pretty weird.
