Crazy Raspberry Ants

News 8 Austin | 24 Hour Local News | HEADLINES
HOUSTON -- Experts say a swarm of ants not native to Texas is spreading across the state and wreaking havoc.

It's thought that the so-called "crazy raspberry ants" arrived aboard a cargo ship in 2002.

Since then they've run rampant in homes and yards across the Houston area.
They've shorted out electrical boxes and are messing up computers. They are apparently attracted to electrical wiring.

The Texas Department of Agriculture is working with A&M and the feds on how to stop the ants, which have been found in Harris, Brazoria, Galveston, Montgomery and Wharton counties.

The hairy, reddish-brown bugs are about the size of fleas, and are for now named after an exterminator who got into an early, futile fight with them.

They also wander erratically instead of marching in regimented lines.

They appear resistant to sprays and other exterminating tactics.

The "crazy raspberry ant."

I continued to use the wrong spelling as per usual on the board, ie "moran"
