Since Leyland is so loyal to too many people, hopefully Dombrowski lays down the hammer and forces the issue on a couple fronts. Pitching coach would be a great starting point. DHs who cannot produce wouldn't hurt either.

A roster crisis is imminent as Dontrelle Willis returns from injury rehab.

Send Gallaraga, who has been the team's most consistent starter for the last month, back down to AAA, or eat $6 million of Kenny Rogers' salary?

Or, eat $10 million of Sheffield's salary??

(note, they have the money to do all of this -- they have money spewing out of their ears)

Or, send somebody else who is playing better down to the minors?

Or, maybe a shakeup in the coaching staff.

With Mazzone out there and available as pitching coach, and Don Baylor (among others) available as hitting coach, changes are possible.

Hopefully, if any talk of signing Bonds or Roger Clemens comes up, it will quickly and emphatically be shot out of the water. Signing 40+ year-old fossils is largely what has landed them in this situation.

Sure is...

Not that this is a good idea, but I bet they're going to discuss signing Kenny Lofton. He's 40, but hits well, bunts well, has speed and can play left field and is left handed and has a fire in his belly...something a lot of players on this team don't have...

Kenny Lofton would be a lot better than Gary Sheffield or Barry Bonds at this point.

Why not, I'm sure adding ANOTHER aging veteran to the roster would really help out.

If they do this, I will at least give them credit for sticking to their game plan, regardless of whether that plan is flaming out.

Oh Christ.

Rickey Henderson is out there too.

Ron LeFlore is still a free agent, I think.

I agree that it wouldn't necessarily be good to add another guy that age, but who knows...especially with the team they've assembled this year

Lofton pushed Cleveland past Detroit last summer. Other than age, I can't think of a reason why he is not signed.

However, if this team can stay within 10 games by the All_Star break - they have a shot if they play well 2nd half. Granted, they haven't given any reason to believe that will happen

The Tigers played good baseball from April 14 - May 1 where they went 12-5. Other than that, it has been horrible.

Players in their late 30s and 40s frequently have abrupt and drastic declines in performance, usually resulting in the end of their careers. This is not an opinion, this is fact.

This is why there aren't many players around in their 40s. Or 50s, or 60s.

When you load up your roster with these guys, the likelihood increases geometrically that more than one of them will experience these career flameouts at the same time, leaving huge gaping holes in your lineup/roster. From all appearances, this may indeed be occurring with Rogers and Sheffield. (Although Rogers and Sheffield by themselves are hardly the reason the team is in the tank.)

For Christ's sake, Todd Jones is one of the very few players on the team who is actually playing WELL. Just think where the team would be if he hit the skids, too.

I wouldn't go that far as to say he's playing well...he's only pitched 16 innings and only has 6 saves! Mediocre ERA so far too, the rest of the club has not given him a chance to either show more or screw up more.

Getting back to the primary question of what to do once Willis returns. I think at this point Gallaragha has played himself into a starting role. Either move Willis or Kenny into the bullpen to take Zach Miner's long relief role. They couldn't do much worse than that, although he's been playing better as of late.

I have a feeling Miner will be sent down. He has an option left, and it makes more sense.

Armando cannot be taken from the starting rotation.

Actually the starters have not been an issue during this slump. The bats have been horrible.

Jones is 6-6 in save opportunities. No matter how you cut it, that's doing OK. He's got to blow at least one save before you can really start going crazy on him.

At this point, to move Gallaraga out of the rotation while moving Willis back in and keeping Rogers in there would be absolutely nuts. Although it's the kind of thing teams do sometimes to "shake the players up."

I was at the Tigers game yesterday and I'll tell you this is a sick team...I sat 10 rows behind their dugout and there's absolutely NO FIRE...Cabrera pounds his chest after he catches a friggin popup! Give me a break! Leyland hardly interacts with the players during that game...relief pitcing is a disaster-walking in a run! Not to mention Robertson's bonehead walk of Randy Johnson! No clutch hits...Pudge seems to be the only guy that's playing with emotion.

This is going to be a very long season and it will be an achievement if the Tigers finish much above .500 IMO.

All you turnip heads who continue to bash the Tigers are gonna be sorry when they go on about a 14-4 streak here soon, and put the rest of the Central in the rear view mirror

No kidding. I was belittled when I suggested Sheffield was going downhill and Rogers was over the hill. It seems people thought these guys would go on forever. Duh. I knew the Sheffield acqusition was not going to work out. And my god - Rogers had a fantasy season in '06. Ain't gonna happen again.

Good call

You bet against the Tigers in one of the 3 games they won in the last 15

Fire the Tigers. They were better with more no-names and no expectations.
