So the 1-0 double OT win over St. Louis in '96 was horrible?

That's a little ignorant, don't you think?
There's a reason why soccer is the most popular sport in the world. I'm not trying to start a soccer vs hockey vs basketball argument, but if you thought today's soccer match was boring, then you just hate the sport.... which is fine btw. Billions of people on Earth will disagree with you.
Imagine the Penguins missing a penalty shot in double OT of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals and Zetterberg or Datsuk scoring a huge goal shortly thereafter to win the championship 2-1. That's kinda what happened with Terry's miracle miss in PK, then the huge save by the Man U keeper a couple rounds later to clinch it.

And your ridicule of our love of soccer suggests that you do not, in fact, "appreciate opinions" - at least not those other than your own.

I have no problem with soccer, to each their own.
But I don't get comparing it to a hockey game with endless hitting, 60 shots on net and constant action.
Isn't soccer just a lot of back and forth at mid-field with an occasional shot on goal
And the diving is an embarrassment to sport.

I'll give props to hockey players for being tough.
But come on... basketball players flop as much as soccer players... with the difference that there's an actual penalty for flopping in soccer, but there isn't one in basketball.
Also... soccer players crack their heads open all the time, twist their ankles, dislocate their shoulders, etc. and keep playing.
Franz Beckenbauer dislocated his shoulder in a World Cup and simply wrapped his arm to his chest and kept playing.
DWade had the same injury, and he went out of the game, IN A WHEELCHAIR, CRYING!!!!
Who's the bigger pu55y?
Don't get me wrong... I like basketball. But I just laugh at basketball fans that complain about flopping in soccer, when basketball is a sport in which a slap on the wrist or a simple hip bump is a foul.

When Rooney went off, he had covered around 11 Km - I would think those forwards who played the full match went at least 12 km...
 --- that's 7.5 MILES

And that's just the forwards.
I'd like to know how much Scholes, Ballack, Lampard, Carrick, etc. (the midfielders) ran.

How about Ronaldo? I hate him, but he was consistently back making defensive plays on Chelsea's corners, and was the one leading the charge on almost every possession.
And I agree that hockey is tough, but the players play much less time, and they play on skates in a controlled environment. And anybody who thinks there isn't "constant hitting" in soccer is completely oblivious. The only reason there are more shots on goal in hockey is because the playing surface is so much shorter, and they can move back on forth faster because they're on skates.

Wow...just watched the abbreviated replay on the Duece. That was Red Sox/Cubs/Spartan FBall level crushing loss for Chelsea. Terry ~ Buckner?

man i feel for Terry, he kept them in the game many times. I was just glad that Cech and his stupid helmet didn't win, what a freaking tool!(unless it's medically necessary). Drogba is an idiot and showed it.

FIFA.com - Cech to stick with protective helmet
Quote:
Chelsea's Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech will be obliged to wear his protective helmet for "many seasons to come," he said in an interview with the Czech daily Dnes on Wednesday.
"The opinion of doctors is primordial. And as a result of that I certainly will not be able to take off my helmet for many seasons to come," Cech said.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper was forced to wear the helmet following an horrific head injury during the Premier League match against Reading in October 2006. Cech suffered a fractured skull and underwent surgery following the clash with Reading striker Stephen Hunt.
"As the bone in the skull has already been fractured, there is no guarantee that this could not happen again. No-one wants to allow the slightest risk," Cech added.
"The helmet allows me to play. I have already got used to it, I am not aware of it during the game," he added.

Isn't hitting illegal in soccer?
That's my point on the playing surface. It's shorter, skating is fast and the action is endless. Maybe soccer should shorten the field and liven it up a bit and cut down on the mid-field boredom.

Hitting's illegal in soccer?
It's MUCH more of a contact sport than basketball.
Why did you choose to ignore my post about flopping leading to a penalty in soccer but not in basketball? Or about DWade crying and going out in a wheelchair for the EXACT SAME INJURY as the one Beckenbauer suffered but kept playing in that game? Or about A SLAP ON THE WRIST being a foul in basketball?
If you mean punching someone... then yes, hitting is illegal in soccer. But ANY shoulder-to-shoulder contacts are legal, and a lot of hip checks, bumps, pushes, shoves, and kicks are allowed by refs.
Some of the fouls that are common ones in soccer are flagrant fouls in basketball (example: pushing someone from the back while he's trying to finish).

As far as shortening the field and making the game faster... it's called indoor soccer. It's not uncommon for an indoor soccer team to score 6 or 7 goals in a match. Hell, I once took part in a match of indoor soccer that ended with a score of 32 to 27 (the worst defense I've ever seen played, ever).
The substitutions are similar to hockey's, you have shootouts, etc... basically a mix between soccer and hockey. But most soccer fans (even those that play indoor soccer professionally) will tell you that the REAL game of soccer is better, more exciting, and, most of all, MORE PHYSICALLY DEMANDING.

why should they shorten it for ignorant fans like you when it's already the far-and-away most popular sport in the world?

Nice cup lifting there. Very similar to the Stanley Cup lifting tradition.

Maybe it has something to do with not using your hands. Sports are about athleticism, running, jumping, throwing hitting and shooting. Why take away the use of the arms and limit the athletes It makes for a slow, monotonous game.

Or maybe it's designed for a different type of athlete, smart one.
Steve Nash dreamed of becoming a pro soccer player, just like his dad and his brother... however, he wasn't good enough and couldn't cut it. Now, he's one of the best basketball players on earth.
Chad Johnson's favorite sport is soccer, too... he couldn't cut it, so instead he became a borderline hall-of-fame WR.
I've never heard of a soccer player that dreamed of being anything but a soccer player.
