Professor Barkaya, the present day scientific director of the Institute, speaking to the Independent explains that Dr. Ivanov “took sperm from human males and injected it into female chimpanzees, although nothing came of it.” Dr. Ivanov had come to the institute to attempt the creation of the human hybrids, after successfully creating new species of horse at the Pasteur institute in Paris. The various years of testing in the early days of the institute, would manifest itself into hundreds of bizarre experiments before the epic task of trying to tackle 20th centuries diseases.

I understand they would've succeeded too if their two leading scientists on the project wouldn't have been sidetracked with their obsessive experiments in self-mutilation.

Boris Toriskakoff and Vladimir Krushmanutz came thiiiiiiiiis close to their goal of the human-ape hybrid.

I would have loved to be a bird/human hybrid. Flying would be sweet!

And then the blatant LWS-esque threadjack in the comments on the page by coboman, claiming the story is Creationist propaganda.

Kind of ironic considering LWS-esque implies knuckle dragging.

Wiki:
In the 1920s the Soviet biologist Ilya Ivanovich Ivanov carried out a series of experiments to create a human/ape hybrid. At first working with human sperm and chimpanzee females, none of his attempts created a pregnancy. In 1929 he organized a set of experiments involving ape sperm and human volunteers, but was delayed by the death of his last orangutan. The next year he fell under political criticism from the Soviet government and was sentenced to exile in the Kazakh SSR during the Great Purge; he died two years later (see below).

is this on redtube yet?

Volunteers! I have a hard time believing they actually volunteered.
