When I was a kid, I found out that a teacher at a local school was the mother of Lee Norwood of the Red Wings.

I wrote a nice note to her essentially stating that I thought it was really cool that her son played for the Red Wings. (Again, I was in elementary school at the time.)

Anyhow, to my surprise, shortly after I sent the note I received a very nice letter back from Mrs. Norwood, and she also enclosed an autographed photo of Lee. (I would presume that the signature was authentic, considering it came from his mother. )

As a kid, it made my day to get that autographed photo. And it was an extremely nice thing for her to do...I didn't ask for anything in my note, she wrote back and sent the photo all on her own. Very nice people.

When I was in 7th grade ('89-'90 school year), as part of my reading class we were supposed to write 3 celebrities and ask them how much they read, what types of books they like, etc. The only one to respond was Isiah Thomas. It was a great hand-written response with a signed 8.5X11 picture and it came in this really cool Palace of Auburn Hills envelope. Isiah's always been cool in my book. FWIW, in 89-90 he was in to spy books.

Thanks to the RCMB, I was able to get Greg Kelser to personalize and sign one of his jerseys that I own. He also sent me a nice letter.

Really want to rip on someone? When I was in high school, I tried writing both Nancy McKeon and Lisa Whelchel, honestly I was serious about it, I was our high school's "big athlete" thought it would work with them. Sent photos, newspaper clippings, anything I could think of to get them to go out with me, all I ever got was an auto'd 3x5 of Nancy. No letter back, just the photo. Went a few times to see filmings, even went to Disneyland to see Lisa in the Mickey Mouse Club performances, never even got close to her. Tried it with Justine Bateman also, no luck. I know...way to full of myself at the tme. Hey, it was worth a shot. I lived like 45 minutes away, it would have worked!

You are a brave man for sharing this story. The bravery almost makes up for the fact that the story actually happened.

You wouldn't believe the idiotic requests celebs (and non-celebs) get -- I talked once to a member of the Tigers, who said he had gotten letters that started out with a rant about how "lazy selfish athletes never sign nothin,' I suppose you probably won't sign anything either," then enclosed a whole $#$# load of stuff to sign along with a bunch of orders --- sign this one in pen, that one in magic marker, dedicate this one to my kid, yadda yadda."

My freshman English teacher made us hit up celebs for autographs and the best response, by far, was from none other than Lisa Whelchel - only it was her grandmother who responded. The kid's ruse was to say that, due to circumstances beyond his control, he was failing English, and that he had bargained with the teacher to let him pass should he succeed in getting a response from "Blair". Well, he got the picture, along with a handwritten note from the grandmother (who obviously was the one handling all of Lisa's fan mail & doing the "signing"):

Dear Mr. Wollenberg, please do not fail John McGeorge. He seems to be such a nice young man....

Anyway, I wrote Brooke Shields and all I got was an offer to join her fan club.

I wrote Martin Brodeur and Joe Nieuwendyk when I was younger. I sent them both a handwritten letter and a card to sign. Brodeur sent me back a standard form letter on Devil's stationary thanking me for writing and with a signed logo card thing, along with the original unsigned card. Joe sent me back the card signed with my original letter.

I also wrote to Kordell Stewart but received nothing back.

Two weeks ago Scott Skiles and ScotTY Bowman. I know both but needed a few things for a golf outing and they both signed ultiple things and returned withina week.

As a kid I waited 13 moths for Mike Schmidt and got a typed signed letter and signed cards back. HHis letter said he get's (in teh 80's) over 1000 letters a day and has to hite someone in teh off season to spend a week with him each year to sign and return everything. Amazing.

I sent most 6 Tigers. Kaline returned within a week. Hiller and Freehan never responded. Dicks. scUM slappies.

Blake Exor last month. He took about two months but sen them back all with cool different MSU inscriptions on them.

Can you PM me Blake's addy? Did you have photos of him? I have him on a program I'd like to get signed. I know he worked at the Mirage at one time. I assume he is still in Vegas.
