Makes sense for Hossa as well....HUGE money then back on market as a free agent next year. Get a run for the cup with the favorites...then back for another BIG payday!

Holland had moved into "I might not agree with everything he does, but I'm not saying **** anymore" territory with me after winning the Cup with a salary cap in place.

But this offseason so far has been pure genius. Landing the 2nd best goalie on the market for the 2nd LEAST amount of money was great. Getting the best forward on the market to turn down 7 years at the max salary (or whatever the B's were offering) to sign a one year deal is absolutely incredible.

And you gotta respect Hossa for leaving 75 mill on the table to try to win a Stanley Cup. My next call would be to Mats Sundin. "Mats, Ken Holland here. As you've heard, we signed Marian Hossa. If you want a Cup, you know where to come. We've got 2 million in cap room left. If you want it, it's yours. Otherwise, I'd suggest grabbing the money from Vancouver because you're not winning the Cup anywhere else. Let me know."

Ken Holland may be the best GM in any sport, he definetely is the best GM in hockey. It's amazing that the Red Wings consistently develop young talent while picking up proven vetrans at the same time.

Worked out well when the Avs signed Selanne and Kariya.

... While playing within a salary cap. It's not like baseball where you can just outspend other teams. He plays with the same cards as everyone else, and turns them into gold

Someone earlier called the Wings the Yankees of hockey...implying that the Wings are buying a Stanley Cup. However, unlike the Yankees, who can spend as much as they want, the Wings are operating under the same salary cap restrictions as everyone else. The problem is that there is only one Ken Holland and the rest of the league doesn't have him.

If every team spent to the cap I would agree but the sport is extremely unhealthy right now.

I understand the exchange of callling the Wings the Yankees of Hockey b/c they aren't, but his comment made no sense following up to my agreeing with the other poster already mentioning that there was a cap.
