Regular instead of Premium Gas?
So, just bought a new car and it says on the inside of the Gas Flap thing to only use premium.
Just curious if I really need to do that, and if I don't what the hell will happen?
Anyone know the answer....

I would read the manual and find out. Cars requiring premium do so because it is a high combustion engine and needs the octane to operate efficiently (I think). What kind of car is it? Maybe someone could give you better information.
BTW - premium gas is only like $3-$4 more per fill-up. It is not that big of a difference, IMHO.

You probably wouldn't notice a difference.

What kind of car? If it is soem Euro lux it will need the higher octane for the proper combustion.
Most "normal" cars will run fine on regular gas they just wont produce the peak HP

Most gear heads I know say it doesn't really matter and shouldn't see it in the perfromance.

It depends on the car, but most will run okay on regular gas but the electronic system will likely ****** the timing to avoid knocking and as a result you'll get less power out of the motor.
I definitely wouldn't suggest running regular in it all the time, but a tank full every now and then isn't going to hurt anything.
Probably something you should've checked into before buying the car, eh?

You could also take the car into a shop and they could tune the computer/chip to run on a lower octane
For the G8GT there is a shop near Detroit that is doing this as well as a new CAI install for $600 or so, and you end up with 40+ more hp on regular gas with even better mileage than stocl

Never disregard gasoline advice from someone named "Diesel".

Infiniti G35S
I know it's not that big of a difference, but it adds up.... out here in Cali premium is around $4.90 and regular is around $4.57

Aren't there cars out there from the 70's that only run on "Regular" vs. "Unleaded"? What are they supposed to do?

Correct:
The Straight Dope: What's the difference between premium and regular gas?

My car is the same way, but I bought it for its performance. For about $4.50 extra a week, I'll put premium in it so it runs the way it's supposed to.

When I went to visit a friend living in Lapeer you could buy 104 octane gasoline right at the pump - I was tempted but knew it would probably **** up my Saturn

My owners manual says premium or else my engine will knock. I used to use mid grade which worked fine, but now with gas prices I've used regular and no adverse effects. Have heard that consumer reports did a test and the premium thing is BS.

Engines that require Premium do so because they are higher compression. Lower octane gas is actually MORE explosive, so it may burst before the spark plug fires. From what I've been told, most modern engines account for that, and the worst it will do is mess with the timing, which will be adjusted resulting in less efficiency and power.

Probably wouldn't hurt it, you just wouldn't run well off it. That's pretty much racing grade fuel.
