Donovan accepts committment from 8th Grader

Donovan Snubs NABC, Accepts 15-Year Old Son of Doc Rivers' Commitment -

The National Association of Basketball Coaches, an organization which has no power of enforcement but does carry clout within the profession, issued an edict which basically stated that recruiting kiddos prior to their sophomore year of high school is a big no-no -- or at least, "strongly discouraged". Gillispie responded in kind by saying he fully respected the NABC's position and that he intended to abide by it from now on.

Enter Florida's Billy Donovan, who just three weeks removed from the NABC's recommendation accepted a recruitment from Austin Rivers, son of Doc Rivers, coach of the 2008 world champion Boston Celtics. Young Rivers, like Avery, is merely 15 years old and two grades shy of the NABC's recommended 10th-grade.
Kentucky blog A Sea of Blue wonders why Donovan isn't getting a public beatdown after the outcry over Gillispie's nearly identical circumstances

Isn't it more ridiculous that a 15 year old 8th grader is going to college at all? These athlete age discrepancies are getting out of hand.

Depending on state rules, will he even be able to play his senior year? In Michigan, it used to be that if a kid turned 19 before a certain date, he/she wasn't eligible.

I was thinking the same thing. These athletes border on retarded and they manage to get into major colleges.

It's a FREAKING joke is what it is. i don't care if MSU nabs some 5 star player if the guy can barely read.

I was 16 years old when I graduated High School. 1 year older than this guy (in 8th friggin grade).

It's just pathetic.

We should mandate that these athletes be accepted to the university FIRST. Then debate if they can be on the team.

what a joke. But I guess Memphis going to the finals with a bunch of mentally challenged kids is the frosting on the cake.

Just like Clausen for ND the parents wanted him to have a schematic advantage over the kids in his grade that were 2 years younger.
