Anyone using a Nikon D-40. Thoughts
Looking for experiences with the d-40. I can't afford anythign above this level. Looks like a good deal with the lens etc.
Does it take good action/sports shots?
I hacve a sony cybershot 5.2 mp for the past 2.5 years and it's done well but looking to move up little.
Thoughts? And I Can't move up to the d-60 or d-70.
Thanks

A D60 is a waste of money, and the D70 is old an no longer in production.
Buy it. It gets rid of shutter lag. The rest is up to you, and how much you want to spend on lenses. The 18-55mm works well for normal peeps.

I also had the sony cybershot for a few years and just upgraded to the D40 and it is an amazing difference; its well worth the money. I am not that into photography, but since the kids are getting older and starting to play ball, we wanted to get a better camera. My wife and I are both really happy with it. Soon after we got it, I took it to a Lugnuts game and I was amazed at how good the pictures turned out. It would catch action shots perfectly. I am at work right now, so I dont have the pics with me, but I will post some of them when i get home.
SaltednutsNE1 let me borrow his 18-200mm VR lense for that Lugnuts game, and that is currently what I am saving for...im sure there are many other improvements that can be made too, but for my ability level and purpose, I think that lense will be about all I will ever need.

I love mine....I took some nice shots at the park on a sunny day.....but then I tried to do some fireworks shots with the 18-200 that didn't turn out like I had hoped. I am a novice phototrapher and I thought this would be a good intro into the d-slr world

Nikon or Canon--you can't go wrong with either. I happen to be a Canon guy, but Nikon makes very good cameras, too. My one caution--if you truly enjoy taking photos, buy good glass up front. Don't buy some cheapass lens knowing you'll replace it in a couple years. Buy one good lens now--preferably an image stabilized one (VR for Nikon), because some soft, out of focus image is simply **** no matter what you do with it in processing.

cool pics. No problem with action shots. I'm planning on using most for thekids games and at MSU games. From what I have read I hear nothing bad about the action shots.

If you are going to take a lot of pics at State games where you may be a good distance from the action, I would highly suggest the 18-200mm VR lense which I mentioned in my earlier post.

$680 for the 18-200 I think.

I have the D40 with the 18-200VR glass and all I can say is that it is incredible I also own the Sigma 10-20mm lens which is a very nice lens for the price for doing ultrawides.
Here's a couple of shots I've made: with the 18-200, the St Joe lighthouse in SW MI
Here's a classic Chicago skyline with the Sigma 10-20 from the Planetarium.

Love mine.
Takes pretty good action photos
I don't know it it's still at Costco, but you could get the camera and 2 lenses for about $1000.00

Found this deal online for the D40. I think I'm going to pull the trigger. Anyone know anything about this website? Their price is about $150 less than the big box retailers.

Cool-thanks. How does he like it?? Did you get the 18-200mm lens too? I wonder if that lens is a must have or if i can get by with the standard one.

I bought the D40 and just sole my D70 because it is just as good for what I am using it for. The 18-55 that comes with it is a nice light way lens but the 18-200vr blows it out of the water. I also just bought the 10.5mm fisheye and like it a lot.

If you jiust want to take snap shots and want a great compact camera that has great burst continuous shooting ability, 10x zoom, 28 wide angle with a great Leica lens, get one of these:
It is highly recommended by dpreview. You ought to be able to get one for about $340.00
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review
Here are some sample shots of Moscow with that camera from the dpreview site
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=29060327
or you might want to wait unitl the LX3 hits the market next month
initial reviews say that it is the best compact ever????

Anyone else familiar with this retailer? I was going to go for the Canon XTi - but that price for the D40 is just silly.
Edit: from Googling around, they look like a classic Brooklyn bait and switch operation.

Rob, the LX3 looks pretty sweet. I wonder how much the accessories will be?
