Gotcha, yeah like I said the people who have told me that are relatives (50 yr olds) so their views are a little different than mine.

Check out the McKinley-managed apartment complexes in the west Ypsi area. It's a very reputable company. Places like Golfside Lake and Glencoe Hills. Nice apartments, usually really good move in specials, and you're still just minutes from AA while paying quite a bit less.

Makes sense. People get a false sense of security even though it's just as safe (or not safe) as anywhere in AA.

Amazing how easily people get spooked by a couple of brown people.

Funny, I lived there for 5 years and nothing ever happened to me.

I always tell people though, regardless of WHERE you live, if you're living in an apartment live on the top floor. This will obviously not guarantee, but significantly prevent the chances of a break-in.

So if an isolated stabbing happens in AA or E. Lansing, the entire city is dangerous?

Excellent logic.

Supposedly someone was stabbed in a parking lot in the complex as well...but hey, I never had any problems.

My sister lived at this complex for a while. I don't think that she had any real complaints with it. It's only 6 years old, but pretty cheap. And if you like college football....Rynearson Stadium is about a mile away.

Anyone who thinks Ypsi is "dangerous" has probably never been outside of their cushy little pleasantville suburb in their entire life. Ypsi's a freaking college town, fer cryin' out loud. Depot Town has cooler bars than anywhere I've been to in downtown AA. Sure, the far east side has got its rough parts but I can't think of any good reason to venture over there anyway. This isn't Camden or Compton we're talking about.

Moral of the story, don't live in a ghetto and be mindful of the surrounding areas where you move to. Nothing wrong with Ypsi as a whole, but there are some shady spots.

I don't agree with that, but Ypsi does have a Deja Vu and there are no strip joints in AA.

I lived in Fenton for a year and a half and got my car broken into twice. Lived in Ypsi for five years and not even a circular was taken from my mailbox. Stuff happens everywhere.

Every person I've met that was from Ypsi never gave it the glowing endorsement that you are giving it....Ypsi is bad, not as bad as the east side of Detroit or Newark N.J. but to say it's simply a college town is hilarious...

To each his own. To this day Sidetrack is one of the better bars I've ever been to. Awesome laidback atmosphere with a great outdoor patio area, excellent selection of beers on tap, and very very good burgers. Love that place.

Oh I see. So drug related crime in Ypsi is bad, drug related crime in Fenton is ok because there's a meth epidemic going around?

What's hilarious is that somebody who has never lived there is trying to educate me on the city. You're basing your argument on "people you've met?" Oh, ok. I've actualley lived there.

I'm not giving the rougher parts an endorsement. Like I said, I don't recommend hanging out on the corner of Grove and Michigan. If you live on the west side, it's fine.

You do realize that "cities" tend to cover more than just one neighborhood, right?

I have friends that live off Ann Arbor Trail back behind Meijer - no clue what they cost, but they definitely look nice. I'm sure AA could probably give you better directions than I just did ...

First, the part about Fenton was a joke. I have no idea why your car was broken into but if you are implying that Fenton is more dangerous than Ypsi

Second, I've met more than one person from Ypsi. So 3 people say it's bad and move away, 1 person (you) say it's white picket fences. Based on my limited math skills, the percentages of bad vs. good are higher

I grew up in Ann Arbor and I would disagree with 90% of the advise given so far. The barren wasteland between east Ann Arbor and Ypsi is a miserable place to live. Reminds me of areas of Westland or Garden City. Nothing of any interest for me but enjoy if this works for you.

My advice would be north or west side apartments. Something close to town. Contrary to most of what you read on here Ann Arbor is a really interesting and fun place. That's really only if you enjoy culture. If you think the all white people bar scene of East Lansing is the most interesting experience you've ever had then Ann Arbor is not for you.

Start the bashing...now.

Has it been a while since you lived here? There isn't any real "barren wasteland" between Ann Arbor and Ypsi. Not sure what you're talking about specifically.

I lived in the "barren wasteland" that is on the east side of US-23 in between Ypsi and Ann Arbor for three years in a place called Sparrow Wood Apartments. They we're really nice, a little close to the freeway noise-wise, but for a 2 bed/2 bath top floor apartment with vaulted ceilings, they were only like $850 a month. My place was like 1200 square feet and the complex was small; great place to live if you get one of the units not as close to US-23. This is also the place that those apartment finder places always recommend, too. You really should check them out.

Personally, that is as close as I would ever consider living to the actual city of Ann Arbor, but if you love "culture" (translation: smug douche-baggery and movies about gayness), then go ahead and drop an extra $300-$400 a month to live in that city. Also, for the record, I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I was when I finally moved away from that city, there's nothing in this world that can prepare you for when a piece of white-trash high school-dropout from Dexter tells calls you a loser for supporting your alma mater. Your brain just cannot handle that much irony all at once.

Check out The Arena Sports Bar, supposedly it's owned by an MSU grad.

Yeah. Just check it out. There really isn't any "ghetto" area in Ann Arbor (a couple co-ops maybe on the southern fringe of AA) and the areas in Ypsilanti that butt up against AA are fine. There are some sketchy neighborhoods in Ypsi for sure, though.
