AA,
Please don't take me too seriously. I'm talking about the stretch of Washtenaw for about 3 miles that makes me cringe. What is there to do out there? Why would anyone want to live in that area?

My place was like 1200 square feet and the complex was small; great place to live if you get one of the units not as close to US-23. This is also the place that those apartment finder places always recommend, too. You really should check them out.
Personally, that is as close as I would ever consider living to the actual city of Ann Arbor, but if you love "culture" (translation: smug douche-baggery and movies about gayness), then go ahead and drop an extra $300-$400 a month to live in that city. Also, for the record, I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I was when I finally moved away from that city, there's nothing in this world that can prepare you for when a piece of white-trash high school-dropout from Dexter tells calls you a loser for supporting your alma mater. Your brain just cannot handle that much irony all at once.
Check out The Arena Sports Bar, supposedly it's owned by an MSU grad.

This is the typical response from people who bash Ann Arbor. It's somehow smug and unlivable because there is a gay population.
This just confirms that I don't have much in common with you folks besides being a Spartan grad.
PS. The Arena Sports Bar is as boring as it gets.

Maybe because it's affordable for those of us who went to college without Daddy's credit card in our back pocket...

BTW, Ann Arbor has culture? That's the funniest thing I've heard in awhile.
No -- Italy, France, Spain have culture. Ann Arbor is a bunch of snooty yuppies from snooty rich suburbs who wear thick black-framed glasses and act like they care about art. Bunch of phonies.

Yeah, weird that anyone would think Ann Arbor is smug.

..and why do you assume this is how I paid for MSU? The stereotype that all people in Ann Arbor are filthy rich is not very accurate.
Secondly, anyone who rents for more than a year or two after college is a fool. It's like throwing money in the toilet.

Thanks for putting words into my mouth, Holmes. Where did I say anything about a gay population in the city of Ann Arbor, and where did I say that was the reason the city was, as you called it, "unlivable?" My point was only about the "culture" you were promoting, which is nothing more than some unstomachable art-house movies and whiny fools protesting along Liberty. But, instead, if you don't love Ann Arbor, you're nothing but a classless homophobe. Thanks again for clarifying that for everyone. You still want to move to that city Zombie?
"Throwing money down the toilet?!" Have you been paying any attention to the mortgage industry lately? Secondly, I was in grad school at Eastern, so you're point doesn't work anyway.

I see. So you guys are only referring to the Students. That's fine with me.
I never describe Ann Arbor by the personalities of the current undergrad population of U-M.
I'm sure this is how you guys do it.

2 totally inaccurate statements that you made:
1. You used the word 'gayness' to describe the movie scene in your last post. FACT
2. I stated that 2 years after college is the time to buy a home. You were not out of
college. FACT

Ummm, half correct.
I agree that compared to Western Europe, Ann Arbor does not have much going for it.
Compared to most of the rest of Michigan, yes, it does have more culture.

Don't rent from CMB. They screw you so hard on everything monetary, though they have nice properties. Don't expect much security deposit back. I barely got any of mine even though there were no damages and I had the place professionally cleaned. If you don't mind a landlord who will NOT pro-rate your rent even if you move in on the 23rd and move out in the first week of a month, then by all means go for it because they have nice places. They will make you pay the whole friggin month, I've paid 11 months rent to live somewhere for just over 9 months. They are DICKS!

Okay... I used the term, "gayness" to refer to the popular subject matter of movies that are shown in Ann Arbor, which, I will agree is a fact, since I said it in the first place. I don't seek out gay pride movies, does that make me a homophobe? I don't seek out movies geared toward women either, does that make me sexist?
Lets move along... Zombie, you should check out Sparrow Wood, nice place.

I'm fine with moving on but the gay movie issue is ridiculous. You have made up this 'fact' using a stereotype of Ann Arbor. I lived there for 28 years and don't remember a single 'gay pride' movie being promoted.
Let me stereotype you. I bet you grew up in Macomb county. Your dad is in sales for a moderate size car supplier. You are very very white and wear a worn out baseball cap that has an extremely crimped bill.
I think thats 2/3 of the guys on here btw

All right, everyone cool off a bit.
As for my own brief take, half a lifetime ago I lived at Village Green, essentially Dixboro & Geddes. I remember it being fine.

Not even close.
The eastern part of Ypsi has some pretty rough areas, as is much of the stuff close to Michigan Ave. near the downtown area. The west parts of town (as well as most of Pittsfield township) have some really nice neighborhoods, they're safe and quiet, and I have had several friends own homes in that area and have had no problem.

No one said it was exciting, but they did do a complete remodel a couple years ago and it's the best place to watch a State game in Ann Arbor. Hell, there aren't any UofM bars in East Lansing.

I lived in the Glencoe Hill apartments for a year (Ypsi) back in 2005. A couple of those complexes are nice.....they tend to put families together but me being a single college aged kid was put with a lot younger wilder people.
Lets see:
1. There were definitely drug deals going down right outside my apartment in the hallway. And i did actually walk by people having sex in the hallways - not attractive people, scary people.
2. Someone busted one of the windows (ground floor) and tried to break in.
3. My bike got stolen the VERY FIRST DAY i had it there. and it wasn't even new!
I would pay the extra and live in AA.

I wouldn't call it a State bar exactly The walls are covered in UM paraphernalia, and the menu has every major Detroit sports team AND UM represented in pictures, but no MSU. The main difference is the owners wear State shirts and will gladly put the game on. I really like their food too, big menu.
