tOfficial MSU @ Cal predictions thread

Didn't see anybody else step up to the plate so here it is:

I believe MSU is going to come out surprisingly sharp for the first game. You can usually expect some hiccups in game 1 for any team, but I believe they come out on point. Our offense is balanced and the defense impacts the game with big time pressure on their youthful qb. Timely blitzes are the difference for MSU's defense and the Spartans open everyone's eyes with a commanding performance. 14 point win.

Ringer- 110 yds, 2 tds
Hoyer-68% completion with 2 tds
Cunningham- 65 yds
Dell- 85 yds
Jones- Sack, forced fumble, 10 tackles

1-0 (08/09)

I'm going to throw in one INT there for Hoyer, maybe not his fault.

Cal - 31
msu - 27

which would have msu beating the line, which is currently @ -4.5 for Cal.

I could see one int in there and hopefully no more. And since we touched on the Hoyer topic, I hope we can put our frustration with receiver stare-downs from last year aside because this is a new year and he deserves our confidence and support. I believe he can have a great year with offseason work and improvement. This game will hopefully be the start to a successful year.

Not counting trips to Iowa or Minnesota, MSU's history "out west"

2004 - Hawaii L
2003 - Nebraska L
2001 - Fresno State W
2000 - Mizzou W
1998 - Oregon L
1997 - Washington L
1996 - Stanford L
1996 - Nebraska L
1995 - LSU L
1994 - Kansas L

The last 15 years MSU is 2-8.

I think history is often a great indicator of future events when all other variables are the same but,

different Coach
different QB
different defense
different ROSTER.

One thing they have in common is that they are all MSU football teams so, unless we recruit the exact same type of player, coach, or mentality OR unless East Lansing itself has some magical ability to affect people history doesn't really mean anything.

You are really counting 2004 as a loss? You are one ***** poster. So, we have won 2 of the last 3 excluding 2004.

Of course I'm counting 2004, the game was played in Hawaii

While we're at it, let's exclude 2003. Hey now we're 2 for 2 in our last four games!!

Funny there was no MSU - Cal prediction thread, but there was a UM - Utah prediction thread with over 700+ views.

Exactly, history has NOTHING to do with this game whatsoever.

There have been about 800 Cal threads over the past 6 months, they are just not all balled up into one.

What do you mean? But MSU is 14-13 in the past 25 years playing in 8pm games at temperatures between 71-73 degrees fahrenheit and NNW winds of under 20 knots.

If you're going to count Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas...you might as well count Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Northwestern.

so things like the tampa bay 0-for streak(broken at what, 22?) in temps under 40 degrees are meaningless because coaches and players change? disagree. playing OOC across the country against a solid/evenly matched BCS opp is hard and i'd bet most teams playing in those circumstances lose alot more than they win. Cal getting blown out by tennessee at neyland in 2006 when they were good and then beating tenn by two tds the next year at home for example? esp the first game of the year.

MSU will be down 21-14 at the half.

Ringer: 150 yards, but he gets 80 on one long run at the start of the 2nd half to get the team going. Otherwise he's held pretty much in check.

Hoyer: 250 yards, 3 TDs, including the game winner, which comes with less than 2 min. to go in the game.

Dell: 113 yards, 8 receptions, TD

Gantt: 4 catches, 55 yards, TD

Keshawn Martin, 4 catches, 76 yards, including a bubble screen that goes for 40.

Fred Smith: 2 catches, 15 yards, tRCMB immediately calls him a bust.

Anderson: 2 sacks and an F-YOU to Cal Starting LT Mike Tepper

Long: Sack, 3 TFL, 1 PBU

Otis Wiley and Ross weaver each get an INT, both in the 2nd half to spark scoring drives, including a Weaver Int in the endzone to stop Cal's drive that was going to put us away (5 min. left in the 4th, cal's up 28-24).

Cal's RB will get 100 or so yards, including a long, 57 yard TD run in the first quarter, until our D settles in and contains him for the rest of the game.

Cal's QB is harassed all day by a strong pass rush and constantly throws under pressure. Throws 2 Tds, but also 2 Ints. QBs are switched in the 2nd half, to no avail.

Hoyer gets sacked 3 times, but doesn't throw an INt. He does have a fumble lost however.

I sort of agree with this. I think the past can be an indicator in the sense that teams from the east don't often go out west and win regardless of coaches or rosters. However, in MSU's case, a lot of those losses were due to some pretty poor teams as well. This year's team should be much improved over many of those teams.

edit to include:

MSU 30
Cal 24

What I don't get is why so many think that things are somehow 'different' under Dantonio than under previous MSU coaches, and that we should therefore expect different outcomes from what we're accustomed to seeing.

What exactly was different under Dantonio last year? To the contrary, it looked to me like much of the SOS. Fast start to season, weak conference record, mediocre overall record, blown 2nd half leads (Iowa and Michigan), inexplicable loss to at least one inferior foe (Northwestern), losses to Michigan and OSU...

Dantonio has done a lot of good things, and appears to be putting the program on the right track. But judging from the loyalty he has already inspired in many, you would think he's already delivered a national championship and multiple Big 10 titles.

MSU 27 - Cal 17.

Cal has trouble adjusting to their new D verse a live opponent and MSU's run game wears em down early and keeps em on the field. Defensively, MSU's speed rush rattles Cal's patchwork, and inexperienced line, as well as the young Riley early, and Cal makes the switch to Longshore in the 2nd half, but they don't have enough possessions to come back.

Ringer rushes for 120 with a TD, the rest of the backs chip in 40-60 yards.
Hoyer is efficient, but not spectacular. Throws for 235 yards, and eats up clock. One INT and a TD. Defense scores another TD off the inexperienced Riley, and the kicking game contributes 6 points.

The D posts 3 - 5 sacks, gets 3 turnovers and holds the Cal Offense to a to a measly 350 total yards.
