1 MSU student dead, 1 hospitalized after car crash
pretty ****ty way to start the new school year this was on the front page of the state news today.
“They were both drinking — definitely heavily enough — a half gallon between the two of them,” said Chris Bender, a physiology junior, who was friends with both victims and Barton’s roommate.
i dont like this quote however, "They were both drinking — definitely heavily enough — a half gallon between the two of them,” said Chris Bender, a physiology junior, who was friends with both victims and Barton’s roommate.
how could someone let ANYONE drive that drank that much is beyond me, let alone they're not even 21 so ANY drinking involved would mean DUI, etc, beyond the fact of possibly killing someone else/oneself, which i guess happened.
still terrible news regardless of who was at fault.

The article above it is talking about jello shots and foam parties.

Hey guys this was actually a friend of mine from high school. Smart kid, outgoing, extremely nice guy. I ran with him for 3 years and I would never peg him as a kid to drink and drive. Smart people do dumb things sometimes, as we all know and unfortunately Joe had to pay the ultimate price. Please refrain from bashing the kid for his choices (not that you are), and just think about his family and friends during this time. The world lost a great spartan last Wednesday

The girl was driving and will likely face charges, plus the obvious realization that her actions played a role in killing her friend and injuring others. Just a ****ty situation all the way around. I can't stress enough that drinking and driving just should never go together

It is, I had an acquaintance in school that was "street racing" another car (obviously drinking too) flipped, and killed his passenger. He wanted all of his friends to write letters to the judge saying that he was this upstanding citizen... what ever dude, you make the poor decision you deal with the consequences.

well, I would at least like to congratulate the first 10 posters who didn't start the stupid play on words jokes like they did when the woman was crushed to death (or the others before that)
it is truely a sad day that someone loses their live, especially so young and under those circumstances.

Was this the lady who shoplifted and was crushed in the trash compactor hiding from the police?

I was expecting it too . . . that's just how we usually work around here. I'm not saying that's good, I'm just saying.

Other than a fatality and a critically injured woman.

Well, it was a three car accident. They may not have been at fault.
Furthermore, this happened on Wednesday night. How come the first we're hearing about it is on Monday??

It was reported in the LSJ the day after it happened but obviously the State News just began coming out again today with classes starting.

the problem is, the kids around them would refrain from saying how stupid it is to do such things. no one wants to look uncool.

i question the facts, or what the state news is trying to say. they quote the kid for saying they were "splitting a half gallon" which obviously makes everyone go HOLY **** but realistically if you really did split a half gallon you would probably kill yourself trying to (especially if it was in a shorter time frame) but now if you split a half gallon and you drink about 1/4 or 1/5 of it, that makes things "seem" much different. however drunk driving is drunk driving regardless of how much or little you've had to drink.

I wonder if one or both weren't wearing their selt belts? If so, there is blame and I suspect that alcohol might have caused them not wear their belts. And if so, alcohol did part a part in the accident if not the cause then the extent of their injuries.

This is pretty untrue. Most kids will speak up against someone driving, but the driver can easily sneak out quietly, especially if everyone is drinking and not paying the closest attention to things.

Maybe for frat guys, everybody I hang out with at State goes out of there way to make sure nobody gets behind the wheel when drinking, ecsepcially at 1:30 in the morning after doing work on a half gallon.

Agreed. I have seen full body tackles in front yards to keep people from getting to their vehicles. However, anything like that is rare because most people don't want to drink and drive to begin with.
