Bats
I was just outside underneath the streetlights chatting about hockey w/ one of my neighbors and I was almost divebombed by a bat!
Do they get that close to humans all the time?

they used to be in my grandma's old house (got in through the attic). the old lady would get out a cast iron skillet or a tennis racket bat them down, put them in a paper bag and take them down to the burn barrel to burn them.
don't **** with grandma (or her lilac bush for that matter...)

They are just diving to eat bugs, they aren't "attacking" you. I don't think they can see you to be able to attack you.

I had a third floor @ Collingwood Apts. and we had a couple hundred of them living in a broken gutter/drain pipe about 40 ft from our balcony.
They would start streaking out in packs of 10 to 40 for an hour after sunset. It was a pretty crazy sight. There were many summer evenings spent drinking brews and watching the show. It was also great to see the reactions of the first time observers. I was surprised by how many people are totally freaked out by bats .
They would fly into the windows and wake us up occasionally but otherwise no incidents.

One of my friends says every time that somebody mentions bats that "more people are killed each year from falling coconuts than from bat related incidents." He sometimes claims it's the only thing he's learned in his four years of college.

What you need is an angry grackle.
We used to watch one of these angry ass birds fly and "peck" bats on the head on Ann street. He/she would knock them out. They would lay on the ground and one of our "odd" neighbors at the co-op would pick them up and hang them from his fingers until they came to. He never got rabies though if that tells you anything worth while.
One grackle can knock out at least 10 bats in an hour. Must be coached grackles.

Wow. I've learned a lot since the original post.
*Don't mess with Grandma Dawg or her lilac bush b/c she will **** you up with a tennis racket or cast iron skillet and then burn you.
*I am not the only one who has been divebombed by bats. Apparently, it's common.
*And they aren't really divebombing me, but rather 'protecting' me by divebombing and eating all of the bugs around me.
*I'm not the only one that dislikes or is freaked out by bats.
*They have big fangs.
*Cameron's friend didn't learn **** in college.
*jdbmst3k likes any post that mentions hockey.
*I need to find a fierce Dantonio Grackle to protect me.

If you dislike bugs, you should like bats.

Love bats. People talk about rabies with bats but it's only like 1/200 that have it and if they do they're going to be disoriented and possibly unable to fly, which makes the possibility of human contact greater. If a bat is flying around, chances are it's rabies free.

Bugs outside are fine. I just don't like them in my house and I don't like those centipedes with the super long legs.

You mean these guys? They eat more insects and unwanted bugs than spiders do.

And chances are that I can walk across the highway blindfolded too ... however, I'm not going to take that chance.

They are fast little buggers too. I know that they are very good about eating all kinds of bugs...so if I see one in my main living areas (maybe 2x in over 3 years in my condo) I try to stun it and then move it to my basement.

How often do you actually come into contact with bats? It's pretty easy to avoid, if they bomb you they're going after something else in the form of an insect and its very rare that they get stuck inside. The chances of anyone actually getting rabies from bats is infinitesimal.

We had a bat in our house before. Never got in our room, but did get in my roommates room while she was sleeping.
