I know I take a risk here

Im not looking up any stats,
but I gotta believe that though he did manage to make many of his games converted into saves... its gotta hit the morale of the team when he does it the way he does.

Up by 3, 6, 10- you were never sure if the Tig's could pull out the win.

Put in some s*** bullpen for innings 6-9, and who knows what the hell happens to the game.

You pull that off time and time again, and I gotta believe its just gotta wear you down. Its like no matter what we do in the first 6 innings it might not be enough- because (Todd) is such a question mark.

He is ugly.
and fat.

Im glad hes gone...

I never thought I'd say this... at least I got the cubbies.

Ugh. I wish some people never started "rooting" for the Tigers again when they started winning games.

I'll be honest...I had a better time at Comerica when 15,000 were down there because most of the people there ACTUALLY went for the ballgame....and didn't care of the closer was "fat" or "ugly".

As a guy who was a key contributor and difference maker to a championship team, actually HAD a prime and was an intimidator on the mound--yeah, he probably would still be in Detroit and would have had a much bigger following. Detroit is a blue collar town. This is the same town that worships guys with attitude like Kirk Gibson, Darren McCarty, etc. Gritty guys who got it done. Todd Jones is not that guy. Ask his teammates who they would rather have in their prime: Troy Percival or Todd Jones. It wouldnt even be close.

It's too bad he had that injury and had his career cut short. If only he were still playing baseball today.

I haven't been here long - since December 1996. I knew then about the closing of Tiger Stadium. I thought, so what? I had just come from Houston, where we were trying to sell the concept of a new stadium, so it was old hat. That next week was TigerFest, our annual fan festival at Cobo Hall. All I heard was wait till Opening Day. When it came, I couldn't believe my eyes. It was 2 degrees, we were playing the Twins, and we were already under .500. The place was sold out and buzzing.

From that day on I wanted to know why - why this place is so special to everybody I've ever talked to. So I began to ask around. I don't care what anyone says, if you want to learn Tiger Stadium history, go to Nemo's and the Designated Hatter. I would go and just listen. I started to learn of Kell, Kaline, Greenberg, '68, '84, Newhouser, the Babe's 700th homer, Lou Gehrig's streak ending, and so on. I learned about the overhang in right field. I learned that the seats over the Cheez-It sign are closer to home plate than the shortstop is. And who could forget the bullpen, which is more like a submarine? Even though Al Kaline hasn't roamed right field for more than 20 years, it's still Kaline's corner.

Now we have to close her down. People know it's time, but it's not easy. We are the lucky few, this generation of Tigers. We get to close Tiger Stadium. But I have learned we are just an extension of you. I think all of us understand what this place means to you. We have seen it all this year. Fans come to see her one last time. After our games, people have to be asked to leave. I've seen hundreds of people reach over the rail for handfuls of dirt. I've seen people leave teary-eyed. That really makes me stop and think.

We have signed everything you can imagine - scorebooks, balls, shirts, jerseys - just because we will be the last team to play in Tiger Stadium. We know we just represent the final chapter of a 100-year-old story. The guys won't tell you, but they are excited. We all want to play that last game to say we did it. We all have our mementos from the stadium - don't think we don't. After all, this is history.

Tiger Stadium opened April 20, 1912, and hardly anyone knew because the Titanic sank a few days earlier. Tiger Stadium will close Sept. 27, 1999, and because we had such a miserable season, not many will know outside of Detroit. It's kind of ironic. I'm really disgusted we couldn't shut this place down with a playoff or World Series game. She deserved to go out like that. Instead, she will go out like she came in - not much fanfare except to us.

The '99 Tigers are honored to play the last game. Because we know what this place means to you, we will step lightly that last day because we certainly don't deserve such an honor. But I have a feeling we won't take those steps alone. You'll take them with us.

Thank you, Michigan and Trumbull.

Are you playing the real fan card? The fact is the Tigers stunk for a long time and a lot of the fan base just stop caring. As for Jones- before we go around calling him great lets consider the fact he has gone to 1 all star game in his career and he has a career 3.97 era.

Someone who says he's hates Todd Jones...then calls him ugly and fat and says he's glad that he's still a Cubs fan? I'm going to go ahead and question their loyalty anyway. To me that was insulting.

I'm sorry to see Todd go. He didn't make it pretty...but all that matters is that he got it done.

Did he blow 4 saves this year? yeah...but that still makes him the best guy in the bullpen this year.

He'll be missed greatly.

All the **** that happened this season and people want to blame Todd Jones?

At least he does the best he can with his God-given lack of ability. What's Justin Verlander's excuse?

I am. If you couldn't be bothered to care when the team sucked, then keep your damn mouth shut when they get good.

Yeah its real compelling to watch the Tigers in late September when they are 75 games under 500 and threatening to have the worse season ever in the history of baseball.

And a lot of us were still watching and going to games. Not because it was "compelling" but because that's what fans do.

I went. Stayed for 9 innings. Rooted for players like Shane Halter, Gary Knotts and Mike Maroth. Sorry I'm a fan. I guess I shouldn't care when the team has a crappy record.

Hey, spend your time and money doing whatever you please. Just keep your mouth shut when it comes to how the team is run. I'm sure when they inevitably have to rebuild and they suck again you'll just run back to the Yankees, or stop caring about baseball. I don't need input from the last people to jump on the bandwagon.

You can take your crap elsewhere. Fine- I give the credit you showed up and cared along with 10,000 people when they sucked balls for a long time. But now that they are selling the place out dont go around calling out 80% of the fan base showing up that they are fake. Iam no bandwagon fan my ass.

Wow, trashing a guy with 300+ career saves because he "didn't make it pretty." sweet. I guess the knowledgable baseball people are separating themselves from the bandwagon morons who can't be bothered to watch the team unless it has 25 all stars and a 20 game lead in the division.

Go get drunk at Wrigley and stop bothering the real fans.

"oh yeah, I'm not gonna actually put in the 5 seconds of research to see if I know what the hell I'm talking about, I'm just gonna make some ******* posts about how fat and ugly he is"

You obviously don't know anything about baseball, so you'll fit right with the Cubs slappies.
