Jones likely done as a Tiger
Tigers' Jones not likely to pitch again this season
I know I'm in the minority here, but I always thought he was a great Tiger.

He's the all time franchise leader in saves...that makes him a great tiger.
Too bad he went all Guillerimo Hernandez on us this year.

He was a fighter, that never quit, more than I can say for some of his teammates.

A figher for what? The donut tray? He is an embarassment. He sweats profusely after throwing 20 pitches, then untucks his shirt and pulls out his big belly and jelly rolls for the TV cameras? This guy is an athlete who is paid nearly $5mm a year? Take some of that scratch and hit the gym--mine is $50/mo--they have treadmills and everything, its great!
The guy is the franchises all time leader in the most misleading stat out there. He had a long stay and rolled this stat up on a team who played for nothing for 15 years. His stuff was average at best and he was exposed when he was traded to contending teams Why wasnt he lauded on his stops in Minnesota, Boston, Florida among others? Because he stunk.
If Percival hadn't blown out his arm, we wouldnt have had to watch a second go round of this slurp-fest. Thank God its over. The people that root for him must be the same people that rooted for the Tri-Lambs on Revenge of the Nerds.

Yep that kind of attitude he pitched like crap for 6 weeks and all but killed the Tigers chances of doing anything this year. Yes let's praise that selfish attitude.

We already knew that there are a lot of dumb fans out there. These are the same dbags that boo the players and grab balls that are in play. They don't want a guy who gets saves. Just a guy who looks good doing it.

Yeah I hate players who love playing for the Tigers and actually care whether the team wins or loses...we need to rid the team of cancers as such. And don't let me forget the fact he was effective well over 80% of the time.

Yep. Spot on again. Those 3 blown saves that he had this year ruined their chances of reaching the playoffs.

Forget the 4 saves blown by the rest of the pen within a week of his demotion. Its all Jones' fault.

That night against the White Sox when he gave up the HR to Dye they win that game they get within 3.5 or 4.5. Since that game they have gone down the crapper. Time for you to start demanding excellence from the Tigers.

Golly. I wonder if the fact that Jones got demoted after that game has anything to do with the Tigers going down the crapper.

No it only continued when they dealt Pudge for bullpen help.

Jones didn't make it look pretty, but he did convert most of his saves.

I may have offered the opinion that it's a bad idea to stock up the roster with 37, 39, 41, 43-year-old players, but I never ever ever once ripped Todd Jones (in glaring contrast to 99.95% of the posters on here) personally.
In fact, believe it or not, I hardly ever rip players personally (with the glaring exceptions of Inge and Dmitri Young). I never really ripped Kenny Rogers personally, I just don't think it's good to stock up with 40+ year-olds.
Basically my attitude is, players are what they are. It's the job of the GM/manager to figure out how to use them, and if they're not good enough, find somebody better.
Todd Jones is not an overpowering relief pitcher; he just isn't. Never has been, never will be.
While 95% of everyone here was going ape-$#$# over Todd Jones, demanding his immediate execution, my basic reaction was, "WTF, who else are they going to put in there instead?"
They tried Zumaya, that blew up. They tried Rodney, that blew up. They tried Farnsworth, that blew up too. Now they got Rodney back doing the closing, who else are they gonna throw in there?
Jones did the best he could; a lot of the time, it wasn't good enough. Tough $#$#. When he was in his prime (such as it was), he was a decent closer. At the age of 39 with arm problems, he wasn't. All the people dancing on his grave can go F | | |
