I would advise them not to, but if they do, have it open only to their friends, and not their networks...when facebook first came out, pretty much none of the athletes restricted their profiles. I don't know what most of them do now, but sounds like Jimmerson should look into restricting his

If they were smart, they'd keep it private and only between teammates and close friends. It gets to be a problem when they've got 5000 fanboys that just HAVE to be their "friend" on Facebook, send them "encouraging messages", and stalk them in general. I think that the coaching staff should do something about it, but I know that the kids love the attention because it makes them feel like superstars.

A lot of them have over 5,000 friends so don't think the people who add them from this site are out of the ordinary or wierd for having them as friends when they have over 5,000.

Look dude, don't try to justify you adding all of them as your "friend".
This does nothing good for the team or program. In fact it's had more negative impact than anything. We've had dbags texting recruits and turning them off of us, people reporting injury information BASED upon their Facebook statuses. Not good stuff all around. I'd much rather that people not even be able to add them as "friends" in the first place.

Agreed. It's very teenage-girlish. Although I guess the term for it in this case would be jock-sniffer. If you don't know them, don't add them.

I don't even have a facebook or myspace. I'm just defending kids rights to be kids. Anyway...
What about the players?
They are the ones who have the final say if they add the person as a friend or not.
The thing is these are kids....They are between 18-23 for the most part. Most 18-23 year olds in these times are in social networks. Just because they are athletes that means they can't do stuff average 18-23 year olds do. I'm not talking about anything bad or illegal. Nobody should do that stuff. Players being on facebook and myspace should be the least of the coaches worries when it comes to stuff they get into.
Plus...I believe all these players have been advised about social networks and stuff already.

I agree with this anyone who has a facebook or myspace has the mentality of a teenage girl. I can understand if it's for networking but other than that you're a loser if you have myspace or facebook.

Never really understood that argument, especially since most people my age have them I only know a handful of people under 30 without a profile on one of those. It came out when I was in college and it's a good way to keep in touch with all my friends out of state (most of them), so I kept it.

You think Javon Ringer, Kalin Lucas, Chris Allen, Tom Herzog, Fred Smith, Edwin Baker, Isaiah Dahlman, Mark Dell, BJ Cunningham, Draymond Green, Keith Appling, Derrick Nix, Korie Lucious, Chris Rucker, Chris Rucker, Austion Thornon, and etc are all losers?

Sure you can. They're specifically told not to post on message boards. They could just as easily tell them not to use Facebook, etc. if they wanted.

This has to be the first time anyone has compared T.J. Duckett to being a teenage girl.

But they aren't just kids. They are student-athletes. They have to be different. Players being on Facebook and Myspace should be a concern. Haven't you heard of players being dismissed and kicked off of their teams for stupid things that they posted? You try to limit the gaffes as much as possible. Some kids just can't handle this...and especially student-athletes who are under a lot more scrutiny because of how visible they are in representing the university.

I am sure the coaches already talk to the players about this. I just don't think they can force them not to have them.
