Why does Syracuse football suck these days?
They used to be decent. Saw they are 11 point dogs to Northwestern this weekend.

Probably the same reasons any football program hits the crapper, I'd say it's likely a combination of indifferent administration and high academic standards. Syracuse is a tough school to get into.

Lots of reasons...mainly the same as MSU sucking in the Bobby Williams/JLS era. Ineffective leadership and lack of institutional support.

Isn't NY HS football pretty weak (as is most of the upper north east)?

I also think PSU joining the Big 10 had a little to do with it. They were Syracuse's big rival, and exposed 'cuse to the hot recruiting grounds of western Pennsylvania/eastern Ohio, where they got a lot of talent.
I don't think joining the Big East for Football really helped them much either. Pit/Rutgers is not Penn State.

Rutgers upswing, and the resurgence of PSU have really hurt. Their recent coaching hires haven't helped.
The biggest things is the talent level. They are really at a disadvantage with their location. No real natural recruiting base.
To go along with PSU and Rutgers, Maryland is better than they've been in 10 years, WVU is getting kids from the NE. Plenty of schools are taking kids out of the NY/NJ/Phil/DC area that Syracuse used to build their team with.

Three Main Reasons
1 - Coaching
2 - Coaching
3 - Coaching
Remember all the excuses made for BW and Slappy? Has made them seem rather feeble don't you think?

The Carrier Dome can't be helping things. Looks like they're playing in a garage.

1.) Extremely poor coaching.
2.) Extremely poor recruiting.
3.) Administration that probably couldn't care less.
4.) This isn't 1979 anymore - despite multiple band-aids, the Carrier Dome's probably seen better days.

Nice argument, except that it's Northwestern that they're picked to lose against.
Both are private schools, and if anything, it's harder to get into NU than SU. And SU has a much greater football tradition, at least until the 1990's.

Very weak although there have been some pretty good players to come out of NY, they just go elsewhere (Caulcrick, Hart). Their campus is right in the city and they play in the carrier dome. They need a McNabb or Harrison to be good again. It doesn't take too many players in the Big East. I'm glad they suck.

Hard to convince the top talent from New York or New England area to not go south.

That, a lack of tradition, and as others mentioned, Rutgers, UConn, and other area schools on the upswing.

You are not giving proper credit to the Mildcats. They return everybody and are going to be decent. I think you guys should be glad you don't play them for homecoming again this year....

I didn't think of the PSU connection or Rutgers. Two great points. Rutgers especially since they're getting a lot of those recruits I'm sure.

MUCH harder to get into Northwestern. Top 15 ranked NW vs. top 55 ranked SU. Syracuse is also the largest private university in the nation.
