New Ann Arbor High School (not uofm related)
So I hear they opened up a new school in AA called Skyline. I would think this will have a significant impact to the sports teams at each HS. It will take time for this to level out, but I dont see Pioneer being the powerhouse school it was before.
One interesting thing I heard is that if a kid was a freshman at Pioneer or Huron, but is now going to Skyline, they can still play for their previous school until they graduate. That is cool that they are doing that, but it throws a bigger twist into things.

That is interesting, so they pretty much can choose if their play for Pioneer/Huron or Skyline regardless of if they switch schools. Seems like some high school "recruiting" battles will take place for some of these hs freshman

They were going to name this school for Bo Schembechler. Bo Schembechler never won any national titles.
Now we can talk about UM.

Skyline won't have varsity football for a couple of years. The first class is being drawn from middle schools, basically all freshman.
From Wikipedia:

Students will come through Forsythe Middle School, Slauson Middle School, and partially from Clague Middle School.

Skyline sports consist of basketball, dance, cross country, field hockey, football, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and water polo. Most teams will only have freshman teams (football, basketball, soccer, etc.), but some teams will have a varsity team (swim, tennis, golf, track, cross country, etc.). Some teams will play against Pioneer and Huron in the first year.

That is my understanding. I also imagine that the kids have to go the high school based on how the district is set-up.

Bo's son Schemy (I kid you not), did try to get a campaign going to name the school after Bo. Never mind that Bo didn't support the Ann Arbor Public School system. Schemy went to private school.

I actually just drove past this not but 20 minutes ago and thought that it looked brand new and I had never heard of it before. Figures that there's a thread on tRCMB about it.

You live in Ann Arbor but never heard of the new high school? WTF? It has been in the newspaper many, many times over the past two years. There was even a lawsuit about the construction on wetlands and many advertised public hearings.
How did you miss it?

So does this mean Pioneer's enrollment is no longer twice as large as the next largest in the state?

Huron has underperformed in football ever since Verska left. Over 2,000 students and the school rushes the field when they get a W, it's that rare. Pioneer may be affected, though.

I am much more involved in swimming and water polo. Pioneer has been a swimming power house over the last 5yrs, but Huron won states (boys) last year.
In Water Polo, both teams have been very successful. Pioneer has won numerous state titles and Huron is the best team so far this season.
It will be interesting to see how these programs survive.

Did they end up building on/near wetlands? I'll be curious to see if it ends up sinking like Okemos High School.
