A bunch of hypothetical guys that meet his impossible standards. It isn't HIS job to determine where this hard-throwing, 26 year old closer is and how you get him. Just go do it, DD.

we have plenty of hard-throwing 20-somethings on our team and in our farm system. we need someone that doesnt crack under the pressure and i dont care how hard he throws

True, which is why a 35 year old bullpen guy isn't the worst thing in the world.

Agree. Depends on the dollars though.
I'd like to see a bullpen refresh and start with Lyon and maybe Joe Beimel. I'd try to get rid of Rodney - but I wouldn't give him away. I think that Rodney has some value.
Lyon, Beimel, Rodney, Dolsi, Seay, Britton, and one of Bloom/Rapada/McBride

perfect example of what the tigers should do. the pirates signed chris bootcheck to a minor league deal worth 700K. he was the angels first round pick in 2000 and the reason why he wasnt in the majors all that much is because of a couple injuries. you try to catch lightning in a bottle and if it doesnt work it costs you less than a million

Might not be bad to take a flier on someone but you also have to get someone proven this offseason. With as bad as the Tigers were both in the rotation and in the 'pen I don't think you can chance it to unknowns. And with as little money as they've spent this offseason they can afford to go after someone.
It's a nice supplemental strategy but if you really want to compete you have to go after a known quantity at some point.

according to the Orioles President, Matt Treanor agreed to a contract with the Tigers. More than likely a one-year deal but bring on Misty May

Hopefully Thursday day games will be "Misty May shows up in a bikini" day and Sunday will be "Misty May and Kerri Walsh play in the GM Fountain" day.

So much for that idea, why give a 24-25 year-old prospect a shot at limited MLB playing time (as the off-day alternate for Laird) and a chance to work with MLB pitchers and coaches, when you can sign up a 32-year-old with a .238 BA to suck up the PT??
Under their plan, Ryan should be all set to make the majors by age 28 (just when his physical skills start to go downhill).
Hell, why don't they re-sign Sean Casey so they can send Cabrera back to the minors for seasoning. He's a snotty young punk of 26, we need some more veteran experience on this roster.
Ooops, I just saw that Casey is a) only 32 years old, and b) hit .330 or so, which makes his BA about 100 points too high to be part of the big Tigers rebuilding campaign.
Why not go for Kevin Millar, he's the perfect candidate: 36 years old with a .236 average. I'm sure he's a gritty gutty competitor, a hard-working hustler, a real gamer. Can't get enough of those fellas. I bet the Orioles would probably trade him straight up for Cabrera.

Eh...you win some, you lose some. I can't really comment on how a team's prospects will change by getting a cheap back-up C. I don't mind Ryan down in Toledo or Erie for another year, but I agree that he should've been with the parent club all year. The bright side of this move is the assurance that Brandon Inge will not don the Tools of Ignorance for the Tigers next year!

Yes, that's the most important thing, we must make sure above all else that Brandon Inge is happy. We handed him the starting 3B job, no questions asked, now we can make sure he is never cruelly asked to catch any more, since at the end of the season he announced he did not want to catch (about the third time in the last four years he has made this announcement).

Bazardo gone. Signed a minor league deal with the Phillies.
I was hoping the Tigs would sign him to a minor league deal.

You are hard to please.
He had a nice 2007 campaign, 2.28 ERA, and is still pretty young (only 24 at the start of next season).
He had a tough year, but it all started with unexpectedly losing his father in spring training. They easily could have played a big factor in his lousy year. At the expense of a minor league contract, it seemed like a good flier.

what was his future going to be with this team? Definitly not a starter, and he is not a bullpen guy either.
He struggled in winter ball too.

Why not a starter or reliever? Performed very well in both roles (albeit limited capacity) in '07. For a non-guaranteed, minor league contract with an invite to spring training ... seems like a no-brainer to me.
Again, the kid is only 24. He has a lot of maturing and growing up to do.

The Tigers already have guys like him in the minors, plus they have a lot of money wrapped up to garbage pitchers Robertson, Willis, and Boderman. They are basically forced to play these guys instead of giving younger/ less expensive guys a chance.
Horrible signings/trades by Dombrowski will be the downfall of this team for the next 3 years.

Puhlease.
1) Everything you say there has no impact on why you would or wouldn't sign a guy like Bazardo to a minor league contract. There is no doubt that the #5 spot (and perhaps #4 if Bondo isn't ready) will be wide open in ST. Long relief is also wide open.
2) Every team has bad contracts and Dombrowski has had a phenomenal track record for trades with the Tigers.

Guillen, Inge, Sheffield, Robertson, Willis, and Bonderman are all bad contracts
So about 24 percent of the Tigers roster is filled with bad contracts. Which is preventing them from going after big time free agents.
Bazardo didn't have a future with this team, can't really fault the Tigers for that decision, they have others guys they want to give a chance to. He wasn't that good, so the Tigers went in another direction.

And again, most every team has players that aren't worth the contract they are getting. You can't be right all the time. Bondo's and Inge's aren't THAT bad. And the other's all appear bad now, but playing Monday Morning QB is pretty easy, isn't it?

You watch the names that they do sign to minor league contract with invitations to spring training. There will be some guys from the minors not on the 40, but there will also be other reclamation projects and that list will be less impressive than Bazardo.
I'm not saying that Yorman was great or anything (far from it), but when the team goes to ST with 60 players in camp. Bazardo would have a better chance than a lot of them.
And it would have come at basically no cost.
