i think the increase of injury will be bigger than the drop off of his offense. right now we really dont have too much in our farm that is better than a Maggs drop off. maybe Clevlen and Clete Thomas

even then, I'm not sure that we are past that either. By no means is Lyon set in stone as the closer.

well, he deserves the coin he will get in 2009...2010 is still to far out to tell...yes dropoffs at his age do happen, but I would be willing to bet he will, once again, be one of the most productive hitters in the lineup.

You have to award players the caliber of Mags with that kind of contract and he has lived up to the expecations....I have no problem with him making this kind of jack in 2009 or 2010. Now, you look at guys like Sheff, Willis and Roberston...there's some $$$ that's being tossed out the window.

The thing with Lyon is he's consistent. Balls are consistently hit hard...all Leyland has to worry about is whether or not enough of them are hit at people.

The point is that Maggs' contract could easily be the next Sheff/Willis/Robertson contract. Sheff and Willis earned theirs too (Nate is debatable). The challenge is looking ahead and will he be worth $18M in 2010? His production is sure to go down some ... how much? I wish we really knew.

His numbers don't appear to be.

His ERA:
2001 - 4.29
2002 - 6.53
2003 - 4.12
2004 - injured
2005 - 6.44
2006 - 3.89
2007 - 2.68
2008 - 4.70 (2.43 in the first half, 8.46 in the 2nd)

Willis hasn't earned anything for DEEtroit though...Mags has and Shef's dropoff, while somewhat predictable, has been nothing short of atrocious....I don't expect that from Mags...besides, Mags puts a lot more butts in the seats...more than Willis, Sheff and Robertson combined.

Maggs earned the contract with his performance with the ChiSox, Willis with the Marlins, and Shef with many teams. No doubt that Maggs has earned what he has been paid, but the contract is going up in price and I'm not sure that his production will.

The original point was that the contract gets BIG the next few years, and Maggs likely won't live up to that contract. A valid point. It would take some decent players in return to move him, IMHO, though.

Here's a really good analysis of the signing that gives me hope for the season:

The Newest Tiger is Brandon Lyon

Above all, I'm just happy that Rodney won't be the 9th inning guy this year.

it was amazing watching some of the 06 WS today

Rodney came in during game 1 and was just firing strikes with confidence

he hasn't had an inning like that in 07 or 08

He is a headcase. Last year was a wash with the injury then being poorly managed when he returned.

I'm hoping that Knapp can get his head on straight, because the guy does have good stuff.

Robertson can only improve from last year (worst starting pitcher in the league)

Bonderman (hopefully can regain his health), Galarraga (expecting a decline in numbers from 08), Verlander (should improve), Jackson (don't know)

The rotation should be better, as well as the bullpen. Should be interesting to see what takes place. I can see a 12-15 game improvement from last year if all goes well.

Williamson and Lyon will help. That make Rodney a sixth inn. guy not a closer. Zum's is what he is and that is nothing if he is not healthy. Willis/Robertson can both do a mop up long relief job if they are still off. Those and better defense make this a better team. Would I like the tigers to spend $50m more for the best pitchers? Sure but it is what it is and we did well for little $$. Shef is gone after this year and he may be healthy. Why dump this guy if we were going to pay big $$ of his contract anyway.

Can someone tell me why the Tigers didn't try to get Omar Vizquel to play SS this year? He is a ton better than Adam Everett...............arguably the best defensive SS ever, and even at 40+ years, is way better than Everett. Vizquel will walk a ton, have a solid average, and can still steal bases pretty well. Everett does none of the above. The worst part is Vizquel was signed to a non guaranteed contract with the Rangers, and is not on the spring training roster. If he makes the team (which he will), his salary then escalates to $1M, which ironically is the same price the Tigers signed Everett for. Both players' deals are for 1 year.

Vizquel is 10 years older than Everett. I'm not sure it's wise to go with him --especially since they're getting Everett at the same price.

And where are you getting that Vizquel 'walks a ton'? His lifetime OBP is .338.

40 years old

BAs the last 3 years: .295, .246, .222.

WTF, why not re-sign Deivi Cruz.

Anyway we are told Everett is the best defensive SS in MLB (by many of the same people who tell us Brandon Inge is the best defensive 3B in the history of baseball).

Hoping we can be this year's version of Chicago.

As far as the poster who wanted Vizquel instead of Everett, are you kidding me?

that's how you end up with $#$# teams, if you stock the roster with "cheap stop-gap players" and then several of your supposedly MLB-caliber guys get hurt, have off years, or come to screeching ends of their careers (if they're 37-39-40-42 years old), then it turns out your whole lineup is full of "cheap stop-gap players."

MLB salaries escalate by years of service. Therefore a player of a given performance level at any age (let's say a .270 hitter or a 4.95 ERA pitcher) is going to have a higher salary almost perfectly correlating with his age.

They probably got Adam Everett instead because, unlike you, they've watched baseball in the last 4 years. All of those things that Vizquel "does well," he actually doesn't. You might want to visit this website once or twice before posting:

I hate to interrupt you when you're talking out of your ass again, but Everett is considered the best defensive SS in baseball by more than just a few Tigers scouts and Lynn Henning. Unless The Fielding Bible isn't enough of an authority on defensive players for you.
