College Football Coaching Rumors - Dantonio to South Carolina?
Scoop: Spurrier to Tennessee? : Football Rumor Mill
There’s a lot of talk that if Phillip Fulmer is fired as the Vols’ coach, Tennessee could go after native son and current South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier. There’s increasing speculation that CSS thinks he may not be able to right the ship in Columbia. If those rumors are true, UT could be his way out…
Other Tennessee Names: Tampa Bay Bucs Coach Jon Gruden, Duke Coach David Cutcliffe, ECU Coach Skip Holtz, Auburn Coach Tommy Tuberville…
Other South Carolina Names: Michigan State Coach Mark D’Antonio, Former Raiders Coach Lane Kiffin, ECU Coach Skip Holtz, Georgia Southern Coach Chris Hatcher, Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach, Current DC Ellis Johnson (who we think would be the prefect pick)…

Idiocy. Spurrier hasn't set the world on fire at South Carolina, and he's 63 (Sixty-Three) Years Old.
Tennessee isn't going to go for someone in his sixties. Gruden would be right at the top of their list. Of course, they could take a run at DickRod.

Despite the fact that they can't spell his name, I remain not worried. People are placing way too much importance on him playing football there and not enough time looking at the rest of his career.

first off i think Tennessee would go after a big name before they settle on Skip Holtz or cutcliffe
There are two schools i can see Dantonio leaving for. One is Ohio St. and the other is South Carolina. However if he does leave for SC, i think it would be towards the end of his career

Pretty sure MD said OSU and MSU were the two places he would've left Cincy for.
Also, after hearing that MD contributed some of his own money to the Skandy center, you have to think there isn't much that can pull him away.

Plus, isn't he generally hated in Tennessee? Thought there were lots of things said when he was coach at Florida.
Wasn't he the one that said "You can't spell 'Citrus' without 'UT'!"??

I mean, I think Dantonio is the right guy for the job as much as anyone, but a 7-6 season and a 3-1 start really enough for someone to be poached?

I can see Dantonio leaving MSU, but not this early. He's got things he wants to accomplish at State first.

I have a friend that went to UT and I always say that to him...he becomes PO'd!
I can't believe he is 63.

Since most of us believe Dantonio to be a man fo his word, here is what he said about the MSU job:
Quote:
|
“This is my last coaching job, you can quote me on that,” Dantonio said. “Win, lose or draw, this is it.”

he'll always be brought up from here on out because he did a lot to rebuild a struggling team into a conference contender that's not heavily reliant on position players (hopefully post-ringer). if he's smart he'll make sure msu doesn't take advantage of his loyalty but i don't see him dancing around interviewing like saban or rr because he seems happy where he is and wants to see what he can do in lansing rather than resumé build.

This is still a business and there's proven to be very little loyalty in big time college football. Don't be so naive to think Dantonio is the exception to that rule.

Also that he grew up in Ohio.

The Saturday after the announcement, Cleveland beats the Cowboys in Texas Stadium. Saban travels that night to East Lansing and meets with the MSU players.
Saban still is coaching two starting Browns linebackers who played at MSU. "I love Michigan State," Saban says, "Carl Banks loves Michigan State, Bill Johnson loves Michigan State, and I sit in a room with them every day. If one of you guys does something to embarrass yourself and this program, it hurts every one of us. But you hurt yourself worse, and you're responsible for your actions."

The Sabans commission a builder to construct their dream home. For now, they are living in the home offered to them by MSU faculty member Jim Cash -- a screenwriter who co-wrote "Top Gun." Cash's mother-in-law usually lives in the home, but she visits Florida in the winter.

The other rumor would be for MD to leave for OSU, once sweater vest goes to Cincy Bengals.
That was is ALMOST believeable.
