It may be more publicized, but it's likely not more or less common.

Our society is becoming more and more statist each day, and a lot of it is due to the symbiotic relationship between worrywart parents and careerist politicians.

My mom laughs at the way kids are coddled now. Her claim is that the statistics show that it is actually much safer for kids now a days than it was in the past (she spent many years as a psychologist working with troubled teens among others). This referring to random abductions, accidents & the like that would make it dangerous for kids to be out & about without supervision. These rare events are just publicized much more, so if one kid is abducted across the country (usually by a family member, I might add) everyone goes ape-**** about protecting every last kid in the nation. When I tell her about our kid's elementary school drop off/pick up rules she just shakes her head & asks how kids are going to learn responsibility when parents are forced to hover over them 24/7.

Chipped in some $$ with the neighbors along our road to have a crop duster dump some DDT to control the mosquitoes.

This makes no sense.

The reason kids are safer is because adults are more cognizant of safety. So If those actions are the very thing making it less likely for bad stuff to happen, why are they bad? Do you think more kids should be abducted and murdered? Would that make you and your mother happy...

It be just like the good old days ....

- "good old days" logic is lacking especially from parents.

Let your kid go play in the road if you don't think it's a big deal... none of us care.
