I need video editing help....
OK...so actually what I need is help even being able to add my video files to the editing software.
I recently purchased a Sony HDR-SR11 for our family vacation to Disney World. I love the camcorder, but when I transfer the videos to my computer it saves them as .MTS files. Well when I try to import them to Windows Movie Maker it doesn't even recognize the file. I've searched a few sites about this issue, and it seems everyone has a different software demo to download.
So before I start demo'ing multiple types of convertors, I thought I'd ask someone on here if they've run into this issue with AVCHD video clips. It's absolutely ridiculous that a camcorder saves a file as an extension that most editing software doesn't even recognize.
I'd very much apreciate any help as I'm trying to create some DVD's of our vacation for our family. Also, just so you know, I'm running on Windows Vista. Thanks so much!
Also if anyone has any recommendations on a possible editing software that may be better than Windows Movie Maker.

If you didn't erase the tapes you can open windows movie maker, plug in your camcorder, and just import the files through movie maker

Yea I tried using the "Import Media" button. I found the camcorder in the my computer folder, then selected the folder that the video files are in and it shows nothing cuz it's looking for media files and I guess .mts files aren't "media files" to this program.
When I switch it to display "All Files" then I can see them. When I select a file and click "import" I get this error:
"The file K:\AVCHD\BDMV\STREAM\00000.MTS cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

I tried searching for a .mts codec (I have no idea what a codec does...lol....but I searched for one), I didn't find a codec to fix this issue.

I'm saying if you still have the video on the camcorder and didn't erase it
plug in the camcorder
open movie maker
select 'Capture from video device' in upper left
should go from there and populate the collection area, which you can then drag to the timeline to edit

Sorry CB, I dozed off and just got your last.
I did also try that as wel and it kept saying it could not find a compatible video device. I'm uncertain why that is, I had it connected via the USB cable and had hit USB connect on the camcorder.
I'm able to access the hard drive on the camcorder thru my computer. I've also tried copying all the files to my computer's hard drive and try to import it that way, which was also unsuccessful.

Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, AVID...
Try googling "G-spot, codec" and you'll be able to download a utility that will help you convert your files.
.mts is a proprietary codec.
The codecs you can use almost universally are .mpg, .mp4, .avi, and (but you have to see what type of quicktime...some aren't compatible while others are)
If you have any ?s just PM me. I work with this stuff all the time.

Try just changing the .MTS to a .MP4 extension and see if that works (I have no idea if Windows Movie Maker supports MP4 though). You really should look at getting something like Adobe Premiere Elements, or whatever the lite version is called now. It'll have a lot better toolset and support for these formats.
