Hotwire.com is a POS!!!
First time ever on that site...went on there looking for hotels for the MSU @ Minny game in Minneapolis.
For those that don't know, Hotwire categorizes the hotels by the # of stars in a particular region and they don't tell you which hotel you are staying in until AFTER you book. Anyway, I figured I'd give Hotwire a shot and requested a 3 star hotel in the University of Minnesota region...Hotwire said it would be $54/night for a "DoubleTree, Holiday Inn, or similar." I figured either one of those types of hotels would be fine for $54/night!!! They ended up putting me in some POS Ramada (See Link Below) that has awful reviews and is not near anything!!
I called Hotwire to complain and try to cancel literally 10 minutes after I booked, and the customer service rep started bitching at me and said they would not refund my money even though their description was misleading. I proceeded to let her know that this was the worst customer service experience I've ever had and that I would never give them my business again. Anyone else have issues with these ******s at Hotwire?
In the end, I should have known $54/night was too good to be true, lesson learned I guess...
Ramada | Minneapolis Minnesota Hotel | Minneapolis, MN 55413 | Near Francis A Gross Golf Course - 1.5km/1 mile, Har Mar Theaters - 3.2km/2 miles & Rosedale Mall - 3.2km/2 miles

It's not about the money...it's about the principle. They completely misled me in their description of what a 3 star hotel was.

For the Badger game in Minny in October, we got the Westin downtown for $117 from hotwire. I'm pleased with that.

No offense, and btw I agree with you, but I don't see how you can complain when they tell you up front that you won't be able to see what hotel you are actually booking until you give them money. I checked out that site and Priceline years ago, and wouldn't do it for that very reason. Don't you think there's a reason they won't tell you what hotel you are getting? It's Like buying a Bag of Crap from Woot.

It's a Ramada. It's not like they put you in a dumpy Motel 6.

Is Ramad a low brand? I've been in some pretty good Ramada's. The one in Kalamazoo comes to mind. They seemed on par with the Marriotts, Sheratons, Hiltons and Hyatts we usually stay in. On par with that crappy ass Ritz-Carlton in Dearborn too.

Yeah, I lived there for almost 2 years and I can't really picture where that place is.

This is the best option. I've had good luck with Hotwire but I've heard of this happening before. Just complain to the credit card company and they'll deal with it.

You should have booked one of the hotels I recommended in the thread last night.

If you're gonna do this, don't start lower than a 4 star. You are out of your mind if go after a 3 star.

I am going to do that right now and put a stop payment on this hotwire deal. I should've listened to tRCMB in the first place!

Priceline lists it as a 3 star. So does Expedia. Pictures don't look that awful either, and it's in the location Hotwire says it will be at.
Unsupported Browser
Sounds like you're bitching at hotwire for your total lack of research. The whole concept of Hotwire is you don't know what exactly you get, just general. If they told you exactly what you got, why wouldn't everyone book through them for $54/night?
Hotwire has always been nice to me.

Seriously, considering that it's near downtown, this doesn't look THAT bad to me for $54:

I use Hotwire a lot 15-20 times a year and love it but I generally do not book 3 star hotels. I am not sure what your expectations were but, to be fair, Hotels.com and Expedia both list this as a 3 start hotel and Travelocity even goes so far as to list it as a 4 star. So maybe your idea of what constitutes a 3 star hotel isn't in line with the travel industry's definition.
hotels.com - Ramada, MN
Expedia - Ramada MN
Ramada Plaza Minneapolis - Minneapolis hotel details from Travelocity

I've never had a bad experience, and in fact have received some great deals. As others mention, do your research. You can usually figure out what hotel it is. . Going 4 star is a good suggestion too.
