Friends: NYC Hotel Help needed
Now the wife wants to go to NYC in October for a couple nights, and I've never been there so some help is deeply needed on where to stay.
1. somewhere near shopping would be great in a good neighborhood
That's pretty much it. Also, if you have recs on shows or restaurants that'd be great too.

Since you've never been there, you'll probably want to stay in Midtown. Anywhere between 5th and 7th Avenues and 42nd and 59th streets is your best bet. I don't know too much about the hotels; I do know that there is a Sheraton and a W in that area.
As for shows, Jersey Boys is great. Look for tickets well in advance.

What is Jersey Boys about? Where is it best to buy tickets ahead of time?

Not to hijack your thread but has anyone tried the W Tuscancy or the W Court hotels? Both are in or near Murray Hill

For shows, I would recommend avenue q if you don't mind crude humor.
Midtown would probably be an ok place to stay for first time visitors. A little touristy but convenient to the rest of the city by subway.

Avenue Q is closing in early September. If you like 80's hair band music go see Rock of Ages. Absolutely freakin' hilarious and brilliant! Before hand you can buy tickets on-line at the show's website. However, I'd suggest the TKTS booths where you can get tickets for up to 50% off the day of the show.
If you want to avoid touristy for hotels try the Upper West Side or Chelsea for hotels. Otherwise Midtown by Times Square or MSG is your best bet.

Ideal price range per night would make recommendations easier.

If you are looking to stay in midtown
Depending on when you go out there and the deals that they have online my company has good rates at the marriott where I normally stay and a hotel right in grand central. Let me find out what our rates are there and get back to you,
Whnat dates are you going out there?

We stayed here and liked it. Good location (51st and lexington in midtown) and decent price. Walked to Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, etc. Close to Grand Central too, which then takes you anywhere...
There were also some cool local restaurants/bars just east of it on 2nd Street.

Really something in the mid range, I'm gonna use priceline or similar but location is really my biggest thing.

I recommend the Belvedere Hotel on 48th Street and 8th Avenue; very convienient for the theater. Also, a small gem is the Mayfair Hotel, on 49th Street (I think) between Broadway and 8th Avenue. Both are great for Times Square and theaters.

Try the Algonquin on 44th, not far from Grand Central. The wife will appreciate this place. Not terribly expensive, cool, low-key bar in a hotel with upscale guests that behave.

Ameritania on 54th and Broadway. It is same building as Ed Sullivan Theater where Letterman is taped. Its cheap for Times Sqaure/Hells Kitchen but good enough. Close to everything and very accessible from subway. Dont expect the best but if you are performing tourism then you wont be in the room long enough to care. I have stayed there at least 6 times in last five years and have never been disappointed.
