How does it feel to have MSU football back on the map?
Reading the rivals headline today got me thinking about how much perception has changed about the program in the past 2 years. We aren't elite yet, but we're now in the category of "good teams looking to become great". Another 9-10 win season this year gets us into even better territory with 2010 and 2011 going to be even better.
So to my fellow Spartans, those of us who went through the Perles Era of CMU losses and sanctions, Muddy Waters, the Rogers defection, the Saban Circus and the Bobby Williams/JLS ****storm, how're ya feelin now??

Damn it's a good day to be a Spartan

Actually, I believe OSU and PSU had tons more talent than us and were use to playing in the limelight. We are building the talent and experiences necessary to compete for the BT on the reg.

It feel pretty crappy actually.
I yearn for the days of Muddy. When you could bring booze into the stadium and the cops would look the other way. When you could throw the booze bottles at the opposing team's players and not get tossed out. When you could rush the field after insignificant victories and the field wasn't ten feet lower than the lowest seats. When you KNEW the drunk, cute and naive freshman chick sitting next to you in the student section was so messed up that she would ride your pole right there on the bench, no raincoat needed.
DAMN, those were the days!

I agree with this. We're a step away, but pretty close.

I mean just from a football winning perspective, not a "My name in Blanch and all I do at games is get hammered and strike out with fat chicks" perspective.

I'm feeling you may be a bit premature. We have lived through hype before.

Oh, well if that's the case, then I guess I'm pretty excited about what's going on and the possibilities for the future for the team.
As far as getting hammered, that was part of the game back then, Still seems so now from what I have seen. BTW, no, she wasn't fat and no I didn't strike out. She gave it to me right there in the top row of the student section. Lower bowl in the corner, just past the overhang of the upper deck. Gotta remember, things like that were a lot freer and easier back in the early 80's. Plus, the stadium was lucky to be half full, so you had your way with seats and no interruptions if you wanted to goof off.

I've got your back, Godfather. I was at State from 80 through 84, three years of Muddy and one year of Perles. It was football hell. Attending the games was not about football, it was about the party. From a football standpoint, I'm delighted things have changed, as I am in my 22nd year as a season ticket holder. Having said that, I have fond memories of the fun we had in Spartan Stadium when the team sucked ass.

Come on. Be optimistic. If the receivers can hang on to the ball, MSU could have a good year.

Perles was the first good coach MSU had after the probation period. You remember the CMU debacle, i choose to remember the Rose Bowl win. Muddy was in over his head, should have been hired years before or not at all. People that knew him said he was one of the greatest people you would ever want to meet. Bobby beat um, which until last year hadnt been done by any coach since him. JLS- agreed was a train wreck.
I am old enough to remember the Duffy days, when MSU owned the bigten. If Coach D can do that, then i will die a happy camper.

Perles was a good coach, and also a very selfish man. For many of us, he was the savior of the MSU football program. Success at MSU brought NFL offers that he leveraged into salary increases and eventually the Athletic Department Directorship. His dual role as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director led to the decline of the football program. To this day, I'm not sure whether to respect or despise George Perles.
