The hyperbole is really getting to be something with their few basketball fans. I saw a thread that showing their 10-11 lineup and predicted that it would be one that would contend for the final four. Of course it included a bunch of players that haven't committed yet and ignored the fact that the rest of the Big Ten is brining in talent on par or better than what UM is.

OSU, MSU, Illinois, IU and UMinn are hands down going to get better talent than UM. Purdue and Wisconsin are getting talent on par or better than UM. UM may be on the uptick but so is everyone else.

The thread that prompted that one is sure interesting. Basically a UofM fan taking offense to Beilein being compared to JLS and saying that he was more like Dantonio.

This season is their best chance at doing something good in the next 4 years or so, so they better make the most of it. (Sims and probably Corperryale will be gone after this year)

Unfortunately for them, MSU and Purdue will be elite teams, Illinois and PSU will be better than them, and Wisconsin will be about as good as them.

Fact is, Manny Harris is way better than any of the recruits they've landed, and it's likely that he's better than any recruits they're pursuing. Manny isn't even a player that fits their system, but he's 70% of the reason they won 20 games last year. With Manny Harris, they barely make the tourney. Once he leaves, who knows? I can understand how they can be excited that they are getting decent recruits; however, they need to settle down, because their recruiting is not competitive and they'll probably never make a Final Four with the level of recruits they are landing.

You honestly think Penn State will be better than Michigan in the future?

Maybe. I do think PSU will be better than scUM this season.

You can also count on Indiana being better than scUM down the road... their recruiting classes are sick and it will only take them a couple of years to catch scUM.

Way to take your victories where you can find them.

Yes, I will concede that Michigan MAY be better than Penn State in the future.

But year in, year out?

No way should Michigan be expected to be better than:

MSU
Indiana
Illinois
Ohio State
Purdue
Minnesota
Wisconsin

So, assuming Michigan isn't on a down cycle, then they'll likely average around 8th place. Congratulations.

They had a better Big Ten record and overall record last year and the year before, so I guess if Michigan wants to be better than Penn State, they should start having better seasons than Penn State.

I don't know how Michigan fans can look at the players that they have coming in and think they will keep UofM in contention given the way that MSU, Illinois, Indiana, OSU, and Purdue recruit. They are trying to claim that they are building a program, but all they did this past year was have Manny and Deshawn score all their points and grab all their rebounds. They lucked out by them not leaving after the season because they probably wouldn't have made the NIT in 2010.

You answered your own question. They are Michigan fans.

Here's what I honestly think regarding scUM basketball (and I think many here will agree):

Beilein is a good coach. He's not a joke or a dumb redneck like DickRod, and it's actually kind of hard to hate Beilein. Although he runs a silly offense, he's doing the right things at scUM and actually putting them in a position to improve.

However (and this is all very big), scUM won't be a power in the Big Ten for many years because of 2 things:

1. Recruiting: In basketball, there are at the most 2-3 "can't miss" recruits in the state of MI every year, and they all go to MSU. scUM basketball has limitations recruiting outside of the midwest (as does MSU to a certain extent, actually), so they have to take MSU's, Wisconsin's, Purdue's, Illinois's, and Indiana's leftovers. The only recruit they have actually beat us for in the last decade is Deshawn Sims, and he's gone after this season. Manny Harris was a guy Izzo wanted but we had no space for him once Lucas, Allen, and Summers committed so early. Tough luck for the kid--he's a star at scUM, but would've actually wanted to be at MSU. With MSU, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, and OSU recruiting the way they have been, scUM is once again left with leftovers. I'm not saying they're bad players, just that they're not as good as the guys other B11 schools are getting. scUM isn't getting a guy as good as Harris or Sims anytime soon.

2. Coaching: Yes, Beilein is a good coach... but he happens to be in the league with the best coaches in the nation. While he's good, he's not as good as Izzo, Painter, Tubby, Matta, Weber, or the dbag Bo Ryan. Also, while his offense gives him a good chance at knocking down better teams, it also allows for very, very bad games. Remember, that while this team with Manny Harris and Deshawn Sims looked good in the tournament, it is also the same team that was taken to overtime in Ann Arbor by Savannah State. It's an offense that depends on streaks, and that's no good for continued success. It also doesn't help that the best shooter you have recruited in years (Byrd) decided to play for MSU instead.

Sorry, scUM. The gap ain't closing.

Fair enough, I'm obviously a little more optimistic about our future than you are but still do share some of those same sentiments which worries me.

I see UM finishing right around 5-6th in the league every year, on average, under JB, occasionally getting as high as third. I think they'll make the NCAAs every other year. Definitely an improvement over their last decade and nothing to be embarrassed about, so good for them.
