tOfficial General Soccer Thread (2009-2010 season)
Time for a new thread as we countdown to World Cup 2010.
Will Manchester United win 4 prem league titles in a row?
Will Inter get a challenge in Serie A?
Will Real take down Barca in La Liga?
Will Newcastle dominate the championship?
Who will Man City try to buy next?

So far, I think that while Inter is still stronger, Juve are getting a lot better.
Adding Diego and now it looks like Felipe Melo to the midfield is great along with Cannavaro in defense for at the very least, depth purposes. If they can add a good attacking full back, they can challenge. Milan on the other hand ...
In the Premiership, Man U is certainly weaker than they were, but no one is stronger yet. Maybe Liverpool if they can hold on to Xabi Alonso and Mascherano.
In La Liga, I really hope that Barca can hold off Real, that would be hilarious.
But, we will see where the rest of the mercato season takes us.

Since the Confederations Cup ended, I've become a slave to Football Manager again. Game isn't that hard if you're Manchester City

I just joined. Dont laugh at any of my selections. First time doing a futbol fantasy league so am not sure of what strategy to take. Also, I know of all the major players but am still learning all the rest. Should be a fun time.

don't worry.... no one will be able to see who you have got until an hour before the 1st games start in a months time.....
plus up until then you can chop and change and not incurr any penalties...... I think they have made it really hard this year... and i think people are going to have to take massive risks...
Also no ronaldo to get you 250 plus points this year...... so i might actually have a chance of winning this year.......

It does seem like whenever a team tries to buy a championship in sports, it blows up in their face. Real may win La Liga (should be a truly epic clash this year with Barca), but I have a feeling things won't work out in the Champions League. Of course, Kaka linking up with Ronaldo (and maybe with Ribery?)... they could make me eat crow big time.
As for United, it sounds like it's Real or bust for Ribery. Who's left for SAF to sign to make a big splash? My bet is he buys a few more young prospects and then holds off to see what the market looks like in January. As a supporter, I was disappointed to see Tevez go; he's probably been my favorite player the last two years. Probably brings a skill set too redundant to Wayne Rooney's, though, and that was suspected going in with him. Anyway, time for Rooney to step up big time.
BTW, I like the Owen move ... I don't really see the downside, and the upside would be huge if he could find his form.

Agree about Owen, it essentially costs United nothing if he doesn't produce. But there is the downside in that he played for Liverpool. It will take some adjustment. The last time someone played for United who had previously ever played for Liverpool, was in the 1930s.
I'm not sure how interested SAF really was in Ribery. SAF does not go after the big names very often. Rooney, Ferdinand, and Berbatov are the only really big signings that he's done in the last 10 years or so (20 million +). If a good situation comes down the pike in the next month or so, maybe. But I'm very happy with the signings United have already done this summer. A couple of young first teamers (but not yet stars) in Valencia and Obertan, an aging talent with a lot of desire in Owen, and some future prospects like McGinty and Massacci. I think this has been a very successful summer for United, if one looks beyond just the short term.

The Mexico - Panama game is a ****ing joke. (1-1 tie, but what happened was ridiculous)
The 2nd half only lasted 32 minutes. Before that, all Panama did was foul the Mexican players on every play and waste time by faking injuries, etc.
But then Javier Aguirre just helped them out by getting into it with a Panamanian player. Both Aguirre and the player got sent off. Aguirre immediately left the field but the Panamanian player refused to leave the field for 12 minutes. I'm not even kidding... 12 minutes it took to get him off the field. It was the 44th minute by the time they started playing again. The ref added 10 minutes, but in the first minute of stoppage time a Panamanian player faked an injury and while he was being taken off the field in a stretcher some dirtbag Mexican-American threw a cup at him and then the Panamanian players refused to play for another 5 minutes.
Currently we're in the 100th minute and only God knows how long this game is actually going to last.
CONCACAF is a joke...
edit: the ref decided to actually end it in the 101st minute, despite the fact that he added 10 minutes but only like 4 of them were played.
The Mexican players are freaking out and mobbing the ref.
I've never seen something like this in a soccer game... the 2nd half lasted 56 minutes, but only like 36 of them were actually game-time. Panama had no intention of actually playing a soccer game, they just wanted a tie at whatever cost, and Javier Aguirre is a freaking moron for helping them achieve that.

Ha... you left out a few details...
Aguirre kicked the Panama player as he was running by, which started it all.
The Panama player wouldn't leave because he had no protection from the D-cell batteries, bags of urine, etc that the Mexican fans were raining down on the entrance of the tunnel.
The ref was terrible throughout, and the incredibly weak red cards right before halftime did not help things.

I did say Aguirre is a moron and got into it with the Panamanian player. To be honest I didn't see if he kicked him, but it wouldn't surprise me. I was watching and all of the sudden I saw him and the player facing each other. The broadcast I was watching did very little in terms of replays of what the hell happened. Whatever he did was stupid because Mexico was actually playing pretty well at that moment. It looked like just a matter of time until Mexico scored with Dos Santos and Barrera looking unstoppable on the wings.
As far as the Panama player not leaving... come on, batteries and bags of urine? I saw like 4 styrofoam cups being thrown at him. They would've ended the game if people were actually launching batteries. Plus, Guillermo Ochoa (Mexican goalie) went with him as he left the tunnel. I'm not sure Ochoa would've put his life at risk if they really were throwing batteries.
And yes that ref had no control over the game.
Oh, and those dirtbag Mexican-Americans suck regardless of what they were throwing... how the hell did they think that would help if the Panamanian players were already looking for excuses not to play?

I was of course exaggerating on the nature of the objects (well, I hope I was).
It appeared that Ochoa offered to escort him out... the thought process being that none of the Mexican fans would throw anything if their goalkeeper was standing right next to the intended target.

But they did anyways. Freaking morons. Ochoa was with the player and they still threw crap. It seemed like harmless crap, but still...
BTW I've never really liked Mexican-Americans (many real Mexicans don't like them)... I'm not sure that qualifies as racewar, but there has to be a funny name for this conflict. Either way, this event makes me like them even less.
And the Panama national team is dirty dirty dirty.

Is there a new one out? I haven't played it since about 1995! Are the game simulations still jerky blobs moving around? I'm scared to looked into it - I lost a portion of my life to that game. Second only to when I was wondering why Germans were so fastidious and searched Google for "German anal" - I didn't leave my room for a week!

Thanks for doing that. Can we set up a thread just for the game, or at least encourage more conversation within this thread about it? I kicked ass last year - winning tRCMB league and finishing in the top 5000 of 2 million players, but I didn't feel I got the props I deserved!! It was my second greatest achievement after getting on good terms with the guy who ran the paddle boats in Tenerife - you were only allowed them for an hour, but if I brought it back after an hour and a quarter, he didn't bat an eye . Winner!

Just pick Gerrard and Lampard, like every ****er else is going to have to do. It's a shame that the Ronaldocard will not be a factor anymore! Hint: beware of Carlos Kickaball.

This guy nailed it:
Quote:
We have full-time at Reliant Stadium. 100, yes, 100 minutes of regulation have come to a conclusion.
The most disgraceful football match I have ever seen has just finished. Everything about the match put a black mark on CONCACAF and in my eyes, football.
...
The match ended 1-1 with three players and one manager sent off, five yellow cards, and nearly fifteen minutes of game time wasted because of complaining.
Panama disgraced football with their multiple offenses of feigning injuries and wasting time.
The fans disgraced football by throwing objects at players and onto the pitch.
The referee disgraced football by failing to control the game.
This match disgraced football.
