I'm thinking he'd "practiced" this many many times before.

You can the watch the video on the mlive link above. It does not look he hit the brakes before impact, nor does it look like he was traveling close to 70.

I'm so sorry if it offends anyone but the driver was obviously a grade A moron.

What sucks is that his idiocy had to lead to the death of others. It's ok to be an idiot on your own but when your ******* actions take others with you they reserve a special part of hell for you. Did I also read that this 19 year old had a 14 year old girlfriend? I've got a pretty good mental picture of what this guy was probably like in real life.

Oh hey, look. The driver also had a suspended license and the picture of him in this news story pretty much confirms what I already thought of him.

The 14 yr old girl had an 18 or 19 yr old boyfriend who also died in the car, but he was not the driver. There was also a couple of 21 yr old dudes in the car too. Call me old-fashioned, but a 14 yr old girl should not be in a car with an 18 yr old boyfriend and 2 21 yr old dudes.

Sounds like a 4 way to me.

After reading all the stories a few things are clear:

1. Dan Broughton was a bad, driver who had no business being behind the wheel of any vehicle.

2. There is some serious lying going on here.
The girls mom said she couldn't stay at the beach and was told to come straight home. Other people said he was headed to work and tried to beat the train because he was late. ???

The grandmother of the 2 brothers said she knew Broughton didn't have a license and the mother of Broughton claims she did not know that his license was suspended? Possible but VERY improbable.

Also the police get a search warrant for the black-box? Is this SOP? Why did they need a search warrant to get it, seems to me all they would have to do was ask for it.

In her defense her boyfriend was "only 17." When I was 17 I would have been lucky to have any g/f, I would have definitely taken a cute 14 yr old but then again I also wouldn't have been hanging around with guys 19-21.

The guys were 17, 19, 19 and 21. No idea about the relationship since al but 2 were from different towns. There is the girl and her 17 yr old boyfriend and 19 y/o Harris from Taylor and Harris' brother 21, from VA and Broughton from Woodhaven. How these 5 ended up in one car is beyond me.

Another case from today with the same end result.

3 teenagers going an estimated 100 mph on a street in Romulus when...

Moments later, the driver lost control and crashed into a brick and cinder block sign at the entrance of the golf club. The force of the crash, which happened around 12:30 p.m., toppled a flag pole and nearly destroyed the brick sign. Police needed the Jaws of Life to free the victims' bodies from the mangled vehicle, which folded in the middle like an accordion from the impact.

I wonder if these kinds of stories have any effect on teenagers, or is it just me because I'm getting old.

No, they don't. Absolutely not. Please understand I'm sure about little in my life, but this I'm about a billion percent sure. From business I own, to the kids I talk about, to what is taught in Driver's ed classes to watching the behavior of kids who have lost friends to drunken driving and bad car accidents. This might effect a teen for a week, but by and large, there are sooooooo many it just doesn't effect after the initial impact of the tragedy. The kids who will always do this kind of stuff, will be the professional mourners at their funerals, they will say "they were my best friends" they will look horrible for a week. Then, one month later you will hear that many of them are drinking and driving and displaying the high risk behavior that kills people in cars. To be sure, this does effect some teenagers, however those that it effects and has an impact on are not the ones who probably would engage in such behavior in cars anyway.

Oh, and when we were that age, it might have effected us for a week, and then we were right back at it. I'm not absolving our generation, nor accusing this particulay teenage generation, it's just that when you're at that age, you do things you wouldn't do as an adult. That won't change.
